Instead of voting we could give them a series of tasks.

Name the capital of a state you've never been too.

Teach a room full of ADHD 7 graders and live to tell about it.

Shovel snow because the plow didn't show up and make it to work on time.

Walk up to a total stranger and put him/her a ease within ten seconds.

Sell a car to someone of the other political party and be laughing with them as they drive away.

Explain what it feels like to walk in someone else's shoes.

Without being told beforehand be asked to empty your pockets on the table.

Lastly, A Blueberry pie eating contest. Cleanest shirt wins.
