Why do Christians get into so many debates online and what is the point?
Why do so many people spend time debating these things online? Has anyone ever been like, "Oh good point! I'll change my mind!" because of something someone said to them online?
For Christians: Are you really trying to save the person because you love them or do you want them to just admit you are right?
For Atheists: What is the point of arguing so much? We are all gonna die and according to you, we will all be nothing, so why not just let everyone live how they choose if none of it matters?
I'm a Christian and sometimes I think we forget that the point of talking about our faith is to help people and not to prove we are right. What do you think?

I've said it several times, but largely no one who has already decided their stance is going to change their mind. However, the religious seekers who wander through on their path to a new belief system may find things of value being said by either side that they would have missed otherwise.

Evolution is how Genesis reads; the place an afternoon is as Millennium as Peter testified. I agree with much of what you say here, which is why I always try to answer (1) in a positive, supportive voice, (2) pointing to Scripture always, and (3) with an encouragement or invitation at some point in the text.
The reason for posting is to have a voice for the Gospel of Christ in a way that shows (hopefully, to some extent) Jesus' heart to reach and teach those who are seeking. Being right or whether those reading think I am right doesn't matter at all.
Most people won't be convinced by something posted in these venues of anything they don't already believe. I know that certainly I could not be convinced by any of the arguments given by atheists, and it seems they're pretty strong in their beliefs, too. But for that one that might ask a question sincerely, or see the question posted and become interested, we should be here to teach and offer support. It is a one-in-a-million shot, but that one is well worth the time.
God bless you!

I am with you--but sometimes the point needs to be made. However, I am neither looking for being right nor getting lots of points. I will say what I say, sometimes I will try to win an argument if I think it might benefit others. Sometimes I will not, and take lumps. I have to swallow my pride often, but sometimes I keep with a point until people are so sick of what I have to say that they try and shut me down.
I'm okay with that, because I know they are at least thinking about it.
The goal, of course, is to get everyone into heaven. Seriously--why wouldn't want some of these atheists in heaven--they have very logical thinking and some of them have such a dry sense of humor. I think God cries that they don't accept him.

People like to talk about things that are important to them, like their faith or lack thereof. The anonymity of doing it online lets more people come out of their shells; they'll say stuff here they wouldn't be brave enough to say if talking to someone in person or if they had to put their real name on it.
In doing so, we sometimes do lose the point. But telling the truth as Christ taught it and in love DOES help people; you never know what words God might use to grab someone's attention. Remember, the truth is what sets us free!

Basically we have the relativistic Christians who proclaim that God has saved them and doesn't really care what they do in certain arenas, primarily those pertaining to the lust of the flesh..more specifically love expressed in their sexual preferences....and then the legalistic community who say that God will save you with the condition of obedience which empties Grace of it's power and intent.
Both are idolotry and self serving.
Then we have the Samaritan woman who had been married five times and was living with a man.
Christ wanted her to know that He knew about her and told her clearly that she was worshipping what she did not know. Then He revealed the principles of worshipping in Spirit and Truth and she dropped her pots and headed back to town to give testimony.
Now here is what did not happen. Christ, discerning her heart to give testimony and knowing that she was in sin and knowing that she was not well thought of by her own people did not call out to her and say...
"Hey, come back here, you will shame me giving testimony because you are not good enough. If you are obedient and get your life together and grovel and make me Lord of your life, then I will let you proclaim the Truth..but you are not ready. You have too much baggage and are in sin."
Quite the contrary, He let her go and many were saved because of her persistence, crude as it was, that "I just met a man that told me everythin' I've ever done...' As it was, her testimony caused people to be curious and come to hear Jessus and many were saved by His Word.
When the disciples were worried about seeing Jesus with this heathen women and the "appearances", He told them plainly that they did not think the field was ready for harvest and that they were in error. He also told them that they were going to enjoy a harvest that they did not labour for and that the sower (the woman) and the reaper (our Lord) would rejoice together.
This makes no sense whatsoever to the relativist...how dare He tell her she worshipped what she did not know...and the legalist...who would not let her defame Christ by doing the ministry until she "got her moral act together."
God's wisdom is foolishness to man and man's wisdom is foolishness to God.
All Glory to our Lord Jesus Christ and His Mercy..the Gospel...the Good News.
Oh...I got sidetracked...
While the relativists and the legalists debate, Jesus continues to save souls for the Kingdom.

We all have our own reasons, but for me I feel I have been given the gift of Faith from God and know that I get to spend eternity in Heaven with God/Jesus and loved ones that are true christians, so I desire to spread the truth to others that do not know God/Jesus, so that they can go to Heaven also. If just one seed planted grows in Christ, it will be worth all the effort. The point for me is not in the points. God bless

It's good to stretch your mental muscles, so to speak. It makes people more secure and convinced of their own beliefs if they're challenged, and can still come out of the debate/argument with the conviction that they're right.
Although there are plenty of conversions to and from religion which occur in life... I don't know if the R&S section of Y!A has ever prompted any, but you never know what will plant the seed that will cause someone to rethink his/her worldview.

For me I want to get what I know to be truth out their.
I see a lot of angry Atheys and I would love to help them have peace. I only know one way, Christ
I like the questions asked, some are really challenging and make me have to search a bit or think hard. I pray for the atheists and thank G-D for them as they make me a better Christian.

I think that you are totally right. I am neither christian or Atheist. I enjoy reading the debates because both sides have a great point and they like to state there opinion freely just like you did asking this question. To bad it is for all the wrong reasons...
