Based on thirty plus years of clergy counseling, I would say that abortion is the greatest psychological scar a woman can inflict upon herself. It appears to me that no single decision carries with it the possibility of greater regret or guilt than that one. Having said that, we must not view a woman who does this as a murderer completely, but we must love the sinner even as we hate the sin.

I think saying that there is "more evidence" showing that abortion harms the mother physically and psychologically is a misstatement.

Like any medical procedure there is a physical risk involved. But from what I understand, there is a very low percentage of women who are permanently injured from having an abortion.

As far as psychological effects, every woman is different and each woman is different. Some women have emotional side effects, some do not. And attributing any woman's psychological state only to the fact that she had an abortion is somewhat dangerous. There are many factors that contribute to anyone's psychological problems or lack thereof. Things such as education, career, relationships, stress, history of depression, finances...all those things contribute to anyone's psychological well being and saying that in cases where abortion alone causes problems is a very slippery-slope.

people seem to forget the physical risks associated with abortion, i wasn't aware that evidence is only now showing physical harm possible after abortion. a good amount of future pregnancy complications could very well be due to a previous abortion, one of which being an incompetent cervix.

as far as psychologically that would depend on the emotionality of the mother and the situation surrounding the decision. of course one has to consider the mothers beliefs on abortion in addition to the previous mentioned considerations for psychological harm. some women don't believe that abortion is as wrong as most people claim to believe and therefore would likely feel very little guilt associated with having an abortion. and still others would fail to notice the guilt since many repress these feelings to avoid the pain of having to think about it.

I honestly think it depends on the person - some people may be able to go through an abortion and not be mentally or emotionally effected at all, and some will suffer for years. Physically, I have had a D&C (same procedure as an abortion, expect unfortunately the baby had already died (missed miscarriage), I was knocked out for the operationa and when I woke up I physically felt OK, I was very crampy later that night but then the next day I felt fine (physically, not emotionally). There are risks of infection with these procedures with fetal tissue being left behind, or sometimes (1 in 200 I believe) they can rip a hole in your uterus, which does in most cases repair itself, but there is a risk of permanent damage. If an infection goes untreated, this can also cause permanent damage. I have also heard if you have too many of these procedures it can sometimes cause trouble with infertility later.

I'm sure that it would affect some women.

But perhaps those women shouldn't get abortions if they do not want to deal with the psychological consequences.

Call me stone cold if you wish, but if I experienced an unwanted pregnancy I would have an abortion as early as possible and I would not feel remorse. Fortunately I use birth control so it hopefully it will not be an issue.

I guess some women can handle the concept better than others.

In any case, women are informed citizens and must take responsibility for their own medical care.

I have had an abortion and physically I am fine. Emotionally I'm ok too. I often think about the baby but I don't regret my decision. I believe the decision was the right one for me at the time and I would never second guess my own judgement. I made that decision and I had no influence from anyone else so if I second guessed this choice what an idiot I would be!!

I think people need to take it more serious as it is not a light hearted decision.

Yes it does. That is true. If a woman claims that she was not harmed psychologically at least after an abortion. She is lying... sometimes lying even to herself. It's not natural to rip a life out of you.

Women who opt for abortions don't cry on due dates. Women who opt for abortions make a decision and get on with their lives.

The only hrm is that there can be a small scar left in the uterus but it's far less of a problem than bringing an unwanted child into the world who might be neglected or abusesd.

No one makes this decision lightly.

I have no idea about the physical ...but psychologically I would think most people would be affected. Some people don't care. I think abortion is wrong..but I have mixed feelings on whether or not it should actually be illegal.
