I have 1989 Honda Accord?

I have 1989 Honda Accord, it is a standard shift and when I stop at a stopsighn and press the clutch in the engine revvs so loud it seems like it is going to explode. It does not happen everytime but quite often sometimes I have to turn it off because I am afraid it is going to kill the engine. when I put it in gear it runs like nothing is wrong. I Have asked everyone I know and no one has ever heard of this happening. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

For the engine to "race" when you put the clutch in the engine needs more air than would normally be allowed to bypass the throttle plates at idle. If it only happens occasionally then something is causing the throttle plates to be open when they should be closed.

in most cases the cause is a build-up of carbon on the walls around the throttle plate. That carbon is like soot in a chimney; it gets sticky when hot and causes the metal plate to hang open instead of closing all the way. So use a can of carburetor cleaner to disolve the carbon in the throttle body first.

The second thing that can cause the throttle plates to hang open is the accelerator cable that connects the 'gas' pedal inside the car to the throttle body. That cable is a metal wire that slides inside a plastic tube. if the cable is kinked it can hang up and not release the throttle plates to the idle position.

the third thing that can cause this is a broken motor mount. as the engine shifts on acceleration and deceleration the motor mounts stabilize the engine. if a mount is broken it can pull on the throttle cable and cause it to hold the throttle open. this is the second most likely cause behind the throttle body carbon.

the last typical cause is an idle air valve faliure. the valve is responsible for regulating the engine idle. similar to the throttle body where the carbon causes the plates to hang open, carbon can cause the valve to hold the plates open if the valve mechanism gets sticky.

I think you'll find its one of those four that are responsible for your problem

    hope that helps

it truly is worht sh.t. Who needs to purchase a motor vehicle that doesn't run? ok some human beings % a restoration her up'r yet even than the honda accord isn't populair. Get your motor vehicle fixed then you might sell it. yet I doubt it. 1989 is previous. (for a motor vehicle) So i think of your best guess is the scrapyard. perhaps you are able to some coin by way of fact they are able to re-use some areas.
