Regarding Bailiffs. They have NO POWER unless you give them it.

NEVER allow them into your home.

    NEVER contact them

    NEVER sign anything

If you get a letter through your door they can charge £24.50 for the 1st visit then £18.50 for the second visit. Even if they come and put letters through your door 1000 times, they cannot charge any more than that.

It is not illegal for you to keep them out of your home, and it is not illegal to ignore them. So long as you have never allowed the peaceful entry into your home they are POWERLESS. They will only be able to levy on your car and if you don't park it outside your house you should be pretty safe regarding that.

    Regarding DCA's (debt collection agencies)

They are just an irritating little itch that wont go away unless you know your rights.

    check out this site.http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/

Many of the ways a DCA use to intimidate and bully debtors are illegal, and they rely on the fact that people don't know their rights and the laws by which the DCA's are governed.

It is time that people new the truth about these agencies. A lot of people live in fear of the phone ringing or a knock at the door and it is wrong.

If anybody reading this is one of the millions of people living in fear then please check out the CAG - consumer action group, see link above.

remember that bailiffs are appointed by the courts! You are within your rights to deny them entry. BUT if they are collecting on behalf of the court, they will continue to charge for every visit, and they may return the debt to the original creditor- such as the local authority, who have it in their power to apply to the courts for a custodial sentence- THIS IS NO JOKE unfortunately!

Remember that they are forbidden 'by law' no to harass you. also DO NOT let them into your home. No matter what they say. Once you let them in they can then demand entry at a later date. Try Citizens Advice B.
