I think it would be best first to determine what your friend would like to do with her horse. Is she interested in just having a 'backyard' horse, trail horse, jumping, cross country, barrel racing, showing western pleasure, etc? Different horses are suited best to different things. A nice stout quarter horse or paint horse would be a good starter horse if she is not sure what she would like to do. They are very versatile, and can do many different things, with the right training. If she hasn't already, she should get help from someone who is familiar with horses who can help her find a nice, sound, sane starter horse. She may consider taking some lessons to start with, so she can try different things before she jumps in to purchasing a horse. Good luck.

Don't look for a specific breed. Instead, look for a horse that has the qualities that you want in your horse. Being that light and that height gives you the option of riding larger ponies or horses. There are plenty out there in that size range. She would probably look best on a horse between 14hh and 16hh. She could also sit astride a narrower horse than a larger person.

  • A 14.2 or 14.3 hand Quarter Horse would be good if she could find one in your area. I had one for years - I was overweight as a teen and since they are built stout (wide/muscular) I still looked pretty good on her and since I was 5'1 it was also easy to mount without assistance since she was the right height. Most quarter horses are pretty laid back too, but I would'nt judge by breed - I'd go on a horse to horse basis as most ads will list the height.
