Is the Jeep Wrangler a reliable truck? ?

I am looking for a truck that I can use on the weekends doing some light trail or mud ridding but mainly just to have something other than my economy car to drive around in. I owned an automatic 2wd 4Runner a couple years ago and I loved it. If I get something I want to get a manual 4wd but i am not sure if I want another 4Runner or a Wrangler. How reliable is the wrangler drive train? Is there a reliability difference between the 4cyl and v6? I love the fact that I can just fold the top down on the wrangler but i love that the 4runner has more space and can pass off as a nicer more luxury car as well. What is your opinion?

Update:

Jeeper: great info thanks. Do you have a preference reliability wise between the v6 and 4cyl? I've heard great things out of the v6 but the 4cyl doesn't seem to have such a good reputation. I don't need anything with alot of power so I think the 4cyl might be better for me.

Update 2:

Raels: thanks for your opinion but i was really looking for more of a technical answer. Oh and where I'm from anything thats not a car or van is a truck.

Wranglers are awesome. Very reliable and durable if you take care of them. They are also a ton of fun and arguably the most offroad capable vehicle on the market, straight out of the box.

If you want something that has space to haul stuff...its not for you. Wranglers have limited cargo/passenger space. They are great vehicles and super toys...but its not practical for a grocery getter.

As far as the newer 2008+ models go... The V6 they put in them is crap. It doesn't have the power the 4.0L Inline 6 has. But to get the Inline 6, you have to get a 2006 or older model. I have an '06 and I wouldn't give it up for anything. The power and torque the engine puts out is amazing for a 6 cylinder. The 4.0L Inline 6 was a long long standing engine for Jeep..They put it in their Wranglers and Cherokee's (the best selling SUV/Wagon in history) for 25+ years. Why they changed over? No idea. The newer wranglers are fine...but they lack the power needed to really to well out on the trail.

I'll stick with my '06. I use it as a daily driver (mostly to work and back) and on weekends (when I have time and gas money) I play on the trails.

Jeeper is dead wrong. I have an '07 Wrangler Unlimited and an '08 Wrangler. The engines in these trucks are great. Yes they are trucks. They were originally designed as Willys 1/4 ton trucks for the Army in WW2. The inline 6 4.0 liter engines in the '06 and earlier engines are decent but are still based upon the crappy AMC 258 CID engine designed in 1970. The 3.8 liter Chrysler engine is a proven workhorse that has been used in many applications for 20 + years. I love my JK Wranglers. I also own many other Jeeps from 1946 to present.

That is a hard one....I grew up in central Florida and went thru the same thing when I was 16...I went with the Jeep and here is why. The Jeep was a hellavalot cheaper to buy, my parents were only matching what money I had so that was the biggest part, it was also cheaper and easier to lift and modify. But the bad news was I couldn't do a lot of the really big holes and stuff that my friends with the big full size pickups could do. When it comes to mudding you need big ol' tires and the horsepower to turn em....and I found out the hard way that my I6 wasn't going to turn 44" ground hawgs...I had to regear it to run 35" boggers. I would say go with the Jeep for another reason as well. If your dad has a truck you can always borrow his if you want or find that you need a truck... Either way chicks in trucks are hott!! at least that is what my husband said when we met mudding in Ocala

please please don't call it a "truck". my son has a soft top wrangler and i love it as of course does he. it can not only be a fun vehicle it is also very versatile. he tows quite heavy stuff such as a food van and also has a custom built trailer which can be used for camping, not to mention his mountain bike. great for off roading which means of course going where others can't. good in mud etc etc, you name it. the only problem i have (as an older person) is getting into it, particularly in the back because it has been raised/lifted or whatever. sorry i have no idea about the technicalities. love it and treat it like a woman with love, enjoy and don't insult her by calling her a truck.

they are reliable but if you want to play hard you have to remove the axles, dana 30 and 35 are junk .....remember jeeps are not bought they are built.
