when someone calls you and you dont know who it is so you call the phone number right back how can it be ?

disconnected or no longer in service? some strange number came up on my caller ID so i didnt answer then i used another phone to call it right back and it comes up as disconnected or no longer in service. how can this be when they just called me?! when i do a reverse phone lookup it comes up as unavailable/unpublished.

thanks!

Update:

it isnt that the number comes up blocked on my caller ID , i called the number back and the operator says the number is invalid or disconnected. how can that be when they just called me?

Now days caller-id really can't be trusted to show a valid number from which the call originated from.

If you recognize a number and know the preson it belongs to, it is probably for real. But, for people who don't want you to know their real phone number it is very easy to Spoof caller-id. There are services that allow people to call and spoof their numbers through the service. And, if they run their own PBX, IP-PBX, and some VoIP services, then the user is often able to set their caller-id to any value they want.
