Remember Remember the 5th of november ?

Remember Remember the 5th of november

the gunpowder treason and plot

I know of no reason the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

Any one else like this poem, and knows the meaning behind it?

It's referring to when Guy Fawkes conspired to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London, on 5th November 1605.

That's why 5th November is now known at Guy Fawkes Night / Bonfire Night / Fireworks Night etc..

Gunpowder was involved, treason against the Royal Family and the nation, and the plot that was never fulfilled. It could have been a time in history that really changed the world today, that's why it was never forgotten.

It means remember the 5th of November.

The gunpowder plot, to kill the king at the state opening of parliament.

The plot was thwarted and Fawkes was condemned to the horrible death reserved for those guilty of treason - hanging, drawing and quartering.

This was a particularly nasty death. One judges transcript where he passed such a sentence read "the prisoner shall be tied to a hurdle (a square wooden frame with no wheels) and dragged to the gallows by carriage. He shall then be hanged by the neck but cut down whilst still living, and brought back to consciousness. His innards shall be removed from his body (the "drawing" part) and his privy member cut off (his genitals) and these parts be burned before his face, and the body then cut into four pieces."

    Not nice, really.

Source(s): come on chaps, this poem is centuries older than V for Vendetta!

Aye Alex Salmond would have been King now if guy Fawkes had succeeded. Perish the thought eh. Off with the heads of all the English would be his motto

The funny thing is - They still search beneath Parliament before the Queen comes in to open it.

Though I suppose modern methods would be a bit smaller than 30 barrels of black powder.
