What is wrong with my guppy? He looks like he is about to explode!?

I noticed my guppy has gotten huge in the past couple of days. All of his scales are sticking out and he really looks like he is about to explode. What's up with him? I only have a few male guppies, no pregnancies!!

Update:

All of my other fish are fine, is this going to affect them. Is it okay to treat the tank for the one guppy??

    Sounds like "dropsy" or "bloat".

I believe when the scales are involved like you're mentioning, it's dropsy.

Can be treated with medicine. They make a medicated food for it.

Hi It sounds like dropsy. I would first move him to a hospital tank. Then add some aquarium salt 1 tsp per gallon and increase the temp to 86 degree Slowly over the next day or two. I would also start feeding him some medicated fish flakes as well. If you leave him in the tank with the other fish he could infect the other fish. Good luck.

It sounds like dropsy. But the problem is that dropsy is usually a symptom of another problem which can be harder to diagnose and therefore harder to treat. It is usually caused by a bacterial infection. So you could try using an antibiotic, but dropsy is extremely difficult to cure, and the survival rate of fish with dropsy is not very good.

Sometimes raising the water temperature and adding salt to help encourage the fish to release excess fluid can help.

    Good luck!

He has a disease called dropsy

I would get some dropsy treatment from a pet shop and treat the whole tank.

    =] hope that helps

    good luck

I bet he has dropsy. Try treating him with Maracyn 2.
