Pregnant and spotting! ?

I have taken HPTs and spoken with my doctor and I think I am 5 1/2 weeks pregnant. I have not had a blood test to confirm, my doc said she wanted to see me when I was 8 weeks so I have an appointment then. Today when I woke up and went to the bathroon I noticed a little brownish color on my TP when I wiped. Every time I used the bathroom it was there a little bit until this evening. Now it's gone. I don't want to over react but I can't stop thinking that something is wrong. I do have mild cramping but at this point I don't know if I really have them or if I have convinced myself I am having them.

I took another HPT tonight and it still comes back positive. My questions: have u spotted during early pregnancy and if yes, what happened. When u have an eptopic pregnancy does the HPT come back positive or negative?

Thank u for your advice. This is my first pregnancy and I am drivig myself crazy.

yep, implantation bleeding. i had it with 3 successful pregnancies - it only lasts 2-3 days. you'll probably be fine.

I have had spotting at around that stage in four of five pregnancies (3 mcs). Twice, the spotting was the first sign of a miscarriage, twice it wasn't. I'm sorry I can't be more reassuring. Mild cramps at that stage are pretty normal though, and are just your uterus starting to grow and adjust. An ectopic pregnancy would still come back positive - but I think they are usually associated with severe pain on one side.

The home HPT would still show positive for a while after you had a miscarriage, so that's not a good indicator that all is well. If you are experiencing any morning sickness - that *is* a good sign (don't panic yet if you're not!).

I'd suggest calling your doctor and telling her what is happening. She will probably send you for blood tests (you need two tests a couple of days apart) to check that your hormone levels are rising. She may get you in for an early ultrasound. In the meantime, try to rest and relax as much as possible. It's not a great sign, but it doesn't mean something is definately wrong either. I hope it all goes OK for you.

I have had two different experiences with spotting in early pregnancy with very different results.

My first pregnancy I was about 6 weeks pregnant when I noticed a brownish discharge so I called my OB and her office said that it was implantation bleeding and I was fine. Well, I started cramping more and more and having more brown discharge, so I called back several times over the next week. I kept getting the same answer. "It was okay." At 7 1/2 weeks I woke up in severe pain and realized I was bleeding everywhere and had to be taken to the ER in the middle of the night only to find out I had miscarried my first baby even after I had been told repeatedly that it was normal and I was fine. I had to have an emergency D&C the next morning to clear my uterus and stop the bleeding.

My husband and I conceived again 6 months later and at 5 1/2 weeks I started cramping severely on my left side and had very heavy bleeding. Not even brown but a bright red and a dark red at times. I called my OB, (a different one this time!) and he told me to come in immediately for an emergency ultrasound because it sounded as though it could be ectopic due to the fact that my cramping was severe and localized to one side. I went in with the thought that I was miscarrying again and I couldn't even bare to look at the ultrasound machine. My husband watched and when I heard him ask, "Is that the yolk sac?" I couldn't believe it. I was not miscarrying or having an ectopic pregnancy! I was diagnosed with a "threatened miscarriage" and they monitored my hcg levels for over a week to make sure they were doubling as they should and at 6 weeks 1 day they did another ultrasound where we saw the baby and it's heartbeat. Now I'm 35 weeks waiting on the arrival of our little girl which will be here next month!

Some cramping and discharge in your first trimester can be normal, but if you are ever in doubt I would insist on being seen by your OB sooner rather than later.

And with an ectopic pregnancy your HPT can indeed come back positive. Normally though with an ectopic pregnancy you would have severe cramping localized to one side.

Good luck to you and I hope that things are fine with you and your baby!
