Are you supposed to clean your washer?

For some reason my jeans are coming clean in the washer but if they happen to get wet during the day ( like if i get caught in a rain storm) they smell like they were sitting in the washer for DAYS! I immediately go from wash to dry i never leave clothes in there, ive tried fabric softener and sheets.

Are you supposed to clean your washer and with what?

Could it even be the dryer?

Update 2:

Why would they smell suddenly? This never happened before

Update 3:

My washer is somewhat old. Its not one of those fancy front loading ones neither is the dryer. They are the classic white ones. Like if you go to a laundromat and see the cheap quarter pushing thats mine. lol

One of the main drawbacks of the high-efficiency front-loading washers is that they need to be cleaned every month. A scoop of Oxyclean or a tablet of Affresh will do a better job than half a cup of bleach, but in a pinch the bleach will get rid of most of the scum. This isn't likely the problem if you have a top-loading machine, but if it's old or well-used it may need a cleaning too. (I was amazed when I removed my washer tub in my old top-loading washer and found half an inch of crud in the outer drum. Ugh.)

The dryer might be at fault if you're using lots of conditioners, dryer sheets, etc. Fabric conditioners are waxes that can lock in bad odors and even mildew spores. If you're having an odor problem it's best not to use them despite the (nasty) perfume they contain.

However, it might not be either your washer or your dryer: it could be that you're not drying your jeans completely. Jeans take longer to dry than other clothes so they often aren't completely dry. This can be made worse if you live in a humid climate or if you store your jeans in a dresser drawers and not the closet (and especially if you keep them in plastic).

It could also be your water. The last is especially true if you're in an older house with decaying metal pipes or if you get your water from a well. If the last, get the water tested just to make sure.

As for the clothes that smell now - I'd suggest starting off by washing them in the hottest water they can take with a cup of vinegar added to the rinse cycle. Dry two cycles on hot.

Source(s): I don't have a source: I should probably write a book about it, since I've been dealing with this stuff for 25 years.

Washers can get a moldy smell over time because a little water is always present in the very bottom below the tub. There are a few things you can do to help keep it smelling good.

    1. Leave the top open after doing the wash, that helps air it out.

    2. As yours already has the odor, run a full size water load, with NO clothing, just water, and add a couple of cups of bleach to the tub after it's full. Then just let it do a normal cycle. If necessary, do the no clothes, bleach cycle about once per month.

I find that leaving the top open really helps and I rarely have to do the bleach cycle.

I periodically clean my washer by running an empty load, hot temperature, with liquid dishsoap. I also run an empty load with hot water to rinse it out. I always leave the lid open after doing a load of a laundry until the wash basin is dry. I try to switch the laundry to the dryer as soon as possible.

Also, if any clothes, towels etc get wet from rain, use, whatever, I let them dry completely on a towel rack or drying rack before tossing them in with the rest of the dirty clothes waiting to be washed.

I moved around a lot until recently and before using a washer in whatever place I live in, I clean it.

    Good luck!

    Things You’ll Need:

A full load of hot water

    A cup of bleach

    A cup of lemon

    or A cup of salt

    Step1

First fill your washing machine with warm or hot water then add one cup of lemon juice, one cup of salt or one cup of bleach. Start your washing machine and let the machine run through the complete cycle and do not add clothes, suds or any other cleaning fluids

    Step2

After the washer goes through the complete cycle. Do laundry as usual. Do this cleaning method a least once a month to keep your washing machine clean inside and don't forget to clean lint trap.

    Step3

I have shown you an old-time washing machine in last step and this one which people used years ago. Those were cleaned with wood ashes which made a good cleaner at the time or with lemon juice.

    ____________________

Do not use steel wool or SOS or any other cleaning pads or harsh cleaners inside your washing machine or it will damage the surface of the tub and will cause rust to form.

Please do not use ammonia because if you inhale any fumes it may cause asthma attacks or allergies

Could be because you've never cleaned it before and you should do regularly! Once a month i use a descaler in the machine on a short wash and also spray around the door seals with dettol clear liquid which removes both grime and anything nasty and smelly! Every week i clean out the drain off point just to make sure it's free of debris which could stop the machine working if it built up. Your machine, like your car needs a service.

I dont know but I would try to run an empty cycle with about a cup of baking soda to run through and clean out all the parts that touch your clothes

confident, you set the bleach interior the bleach dispenser till now commencing the sparkling cycle. it is not severe how plenty bleach you utilize, in simple terms positioned the bleach into the cup and don't overfill. The sparkling cycle runs for almost an hour and is critical to the upkeep of HE machines. do not overlook your lint filters in the adventure that your device has one. that needs to be wiped sparkling out month-to-month a minimum of.
