is it true 99% of orange cats are male?

A freind of a friend was just given two orange kittens, being told one was male and one was female.. I am just surprised I have always been told orange cats are usually male by our vet

It is true that a lot of ginger/red/orange cats are male, but I don't think the percentage is that high as I have had 3 female orange cats out of a possible 12 orange kittens.

Here's a link to a website that gives info on the possibilities and outcomes of breeding a red cat to another red cat/and other colour combination matings and what coloured kittens and which gender they are -

    http://cats.suite101.com/article.cfm/color_genetic...

    All the best.

In breeding, with red (ginger/orange) series as one of my two favourite colours, (the other silver/smoke) you have to have at least a tortie mother with a red father to produce a red female kitten as red is a sex linked colour gene. It's quite fascinating, especially when you use a solid white male or female, as white cats mask genetic colour under their white fur.

As to ginger/orange/red/tortie cats, if one of the parents have white on them, the offspring have a 50% chance of having white on them, it has nothing to do with being a red/orange/ginger/male/female cat, white colour genetics is a completely different matter all together and not uncommon at all. All you need is a brown tabby and white male bred to a brown tabby female and you will get at least a 50/50 chance of brown tabby with white and without white. The same goes for the red series (it doesn't matter the sex of the red and white/red parent) you end up with 50/50 red only/red and white possible 25% female red/25% female red & white and 25% male red/ 25% male red & white. It all sounds very confusing, but it's not really.

most orange/ginger cats are male but i think it's nearer 75%.

almost all tortis/calico's are female though a male is very rare.

Also with ginger cats of the females they tend to also have some white on them. a true ginger with no white at all is extremely rare

I'd say that while most orange cats are male, the ratio is probably closer to 80/20. It's not like torties and calicos, where almost every one of them is female.

No, actually we have an orange girl cat. However, I heard that a majority of Calico cats are female.

  • I don't know the exact statistics, but yes, majority are male.

My cousin's cat had orange kittens, and as far as I know, all 6 were male
