I agree with or, check with your groomer and maybe you can even sit in with them. I take my Shih Tzu to "Pet Smart" for her grooming and their salon is all glassed in so you can watch what they are doing, that's one of the reasons I take her there plus they do a fantastic job, Good luck.

You can brush the dog a couple of times a day to keep it mat free. You will do it a lot gentler than a groomer would. They have bunches of dog to do every day & they don't have to time to be gentle. So they cause a lot of pain just brushing out mats. Do yourself & your dog a favor & keep it brushed out. Get you a long toothed metal comb & work the mats out with it or a slicker brush.
You can not do the clip at home. It is a difficult clip even for the most experienced. Don't even try it, you won't be able to do it right. But, by keeping it free of mats he will still like to go to the groomer.
Their coat needs to be clipped every 4 to 6 weeks. Very expensive keep up.

Call your groomer and ask! They would probably appreciate you checking in and making their job easier, instead of presenting a dog full of matts and so forth every time. Most will just have you comb or brush out their coat once a day to a few times a week.
