Where do I reconnect the thermostat wiring to the outside a/c unit?

We came home today to a hot house. After checking all the normal things, I went outside to make sure the unit was clear from any grass or trash around it and found the "telephone wiring" was lying on the ground and nothing showing from the unit. I can reattach the wiring, but I have not been able to find any shred of wiring to reconnect. Can you tell me or better yet, send me a diagram as to where the wiring goes into the unit and connects> Thank you for your immdiate reply as we are in Texas where the days have been 105 degrees and this IS a mobile home. THank you

Update:

I did open the panel BUT there is no wiring anywhere to connect to and I do not know which wire goes where. Can anyone show me a pic of the relay? Thanx

Update 2:

the units diagram and directions have worn off. I cant evben find the unit model #

The cable goes inside the unit and connects up to a relay. When the thermostat comes on, 24 volts energizes the relay so 220 volts can drive the compressor and fan unit.

It is VERY important to disconnect ALL POWER to the unit.

Generally, there will be a small round opening along a corner in the back of the unit near the bottom that the cable enters. You'll need to remove usually a small cover but some models require removing a panel for access. Once inside, you'll see the relay, Reconnect the wires from the cable and you should be all set.

    Again, DISCONNECT ALL POWER.

All the other answers are good but besides disconnecting power to the outside unit, be sure that the thermostat is turned off also. It is most likely the thermostat is calling for A/C indicating the the 2 wires in question are energized at 24 volts ac. This voltage is usually not lethal but if the wires become shorted together you may burn out the low-voltage transformer located inside the unit or possibly be part of the heating system depending on your type of equipment. Good Luck.

All connections must be made inside a box, so it's out of code anyway. Stranded wire is diffucult to connect together because it will oxidize and become resistive. It should be on a GFI so if the wires get wet it will trip. Get the idea, replace the wires.

You should see a switching device that turns your A.C. on and off. Its inside the unit. The low voltage wiring from your thermostat should connect to this device. The low voltage turns it off and on. It should be pretty obvious, and you may see the remnants from the previous wiring. Look for a drawing on the inside paneling of your condensing unit.
