Why would my puppy eat this unusual food?

My shih tzu is 9 weeks old and my daughter witnessed it eat a small ball of it's own poo.

I am dead serious and I've not had a puppy before nor any other aged dog do this. Is there something wrong, is it a deficiency of some sort?

Update:

Just for the record, my daughter took him outside, he did his business and promptly turned around and ate from the brand new pile! She is only 13 so you can IMAGINE how she reacted.

You must be feeding him some good dog food if it still tastes good the second time through.

Dear Stick Out, the other answers are correct. They all do it. The way to break them of this bad habit is when you walk them carry a paper towel and a plastic bag and pick it right up--then wash your hands! Maybe give them a dog treat right away to convince them there is other food and maybe let them think it's a reward. Did you ever notice that most dog food looks like crap. They have to learn the difference. Jack

When my scottish terrier was a puppy he would run out into the alley and into other peoples yards every chance he could get to eat all the poo he could find... It was like candy to him and I could always tell when he had gotten into any because his mouth would smell like sh!t for days... It took forever to break him of it and I still think that if I did not tell him no every time we run into any on walks or anything he still would do it.

I cannot tell you why they do it, but I can tell you that its pretty common

    especially when they are puppies

It is very common for puppies to eat their poop. Most grow out of it. The best thing to do is just keep the yard cleaned up.

Sounds like a deficiency to me. You might to check with a vet for sure. Hopefully its nothing serious.

It is common for your puppie to eat their own poop as he grows old.

Just pick up after he does his business

    Keep the Poo Cleaned up.

They all do this at some point. Take away the temptation.
