Since there's so much interest in 'foreign' music today, R&P...?

Evening R&P :)

There have been a couple of Q's today about bands from other countries, and bands who don't sing in English. So...

Please read carefully:

What is your favourite song in another language by a Rock band or artist who *usually* sings in English? And who were you most surprised to hear perform a foreign language song?

Links if possible please.

My choice would be :

'The Silver Gun' ~ Robert Palmer

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KWCsc5Jf-eo

All I know is that it is sung in Urdu, but I have no idea what the lyrics translate as, which is why the video was just images I felt fitted the atmosphere of the music...

Update:

~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~

Jimmy :

I'm not really a Madonna fan, but I can guess why she chose Hindi {goes with her image of the time}.

Pocket Jokers :

Interesting... are you sure they weren't just making up the words as they went along...?!

Adam :

Now, I've never listened to Lacuna Coil before, and I'm not a big fan of Italian, but... I really rather liked that :)

Update 2:

~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~

Vicky :

The first one was beautiful ~ you can tell she was classically trained :)

And I really liked the music to the second one. I liked the vocal, too, but mostly the music!

I still have that list you did me from my Nightwish question, so now I just need to get through the current music backlog, and then...!

Update 3:

~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ ~*~

Kookykola :

I shouldn't really admit it, but that is one Fairport Convention song I *don't* have, because I can't stand it! I'm afraid I'm not a fan of the French language...

{but thanks for the links :) }

Michael H :

I was wondering if anyone would mention The Beatles singing in German...!

Mr B :

Lovely to see you :)

I've never heard Sigur Ros before, and that was interesting.

The final link was a definate surprise. I've heard of the film, but never seen it. I have to say I really don't like the original of the song, but that version was beautiful ~ thank you for linking it :)

This is the second time I've tried to answer, darling! Questions and answers are disappearing at a disgusting rate around here recently, and it doesn't seem to matter whether they're in violation of the rules. I don't know if there's any religious influence, although I have no problem believing that the same people who think that their religion - and only their religion - is the only "true" one and that all other belief systems are evil are also the same people reporting on here. I also have no trouble believing that people who think that the frequently asked question "y r athiest in this section" has a point, and who think this is a section only for religious people, are among the most frequent reporters. Any religion or belief system that says "we are the only ones who are right and all other people are bad" encourages intolerance and censorship. Like darling Jackie, I think that people who report should have to cite the specific rule being violated, and they should have to cite the specific part of the question or answer that violated it. I'd even go further - reporting should cost at least as many points as asking a question does, and, as with thumbs, you should not be able to report until you're level 2 or above. Additionally, I think there should be a limit on the number of reports you can make in a day - the way there are limits on stars - and that any time someone reports more than two or three questions in a row, their ability to report should be suspended for an hour to eliminate the kind of targeting that goes on around here. Appealing is a waste of time now, darling - the Yamster doesn't even bother to respond, other than to send you a survey about the way your "case" was handled. (((Jabber wock)))

The vocalists of Nightwish usually sing in English, although they have a few songs with Finnish lyrics. My top favorite is "Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan" - it's so pretty.

The second would probably be "Erämaan Viimeinen". It's basically their song "Last of the Wilds (which is an amazing instrumental) with lyrics. LotW is better, but EV is highly catchy. :)

    (Sung by Jonsu from Indica)

    EDIT:

Okay I can't think of anything off the top of my head. I'd be surprised if I ever heard Within Temptation do any songs in their native language (or any other one, for that matter).

All of their songs are in English and I have many other songs that Sharon den Adel, the vocalist, is featured on - all of them are in English, lol. They are Dutch. The only time I've heard them/her speak in their language is during interviews and when talking to the crowd on stage.

    SIDE EDIT:

For my Nightwish answer - Tarja is my favorite singer, and she often sings in Finnish/German as well as English, but when she was with Nightwish they didn't do many non-English songs. That's why I said them and not her, to anyone who might be wondering. :)

    EDIT:

:) Glad you liked it. Personally I adore the live video of that show where they performed "The Phantom of the Opera", but that's getting off on another tangent. xD

  • Canadian folk is a great place to start looking. Of course with French as one of their officical langage, I don't know if it can be considered as "foreign"!

    The Arcade Fire - Haiti

Kate and Anna McGarrigle - Complainte pour Ste Catherine

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRkngBZOBRs

Aah, shame there used to be an even better version, when they were in their prime, but can't find it, must have been removed!

Other than that, how about a few french classics:

Michel Polnareff - L'homme qui pleurait des larmes de verre (The man who cried tears of glass)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFewhagzS-0

Michel Polnareff - Love Me, Please Love Mehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp2NPj_FYWI

Jacques Brel (Belgian actually) - Amsterdam - a must watch!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6rvMZnWKZc

    A few others...

Caterina Caselli - insieme a te non ci sto più (Italy)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhbnOWE157M

Chico Buarque and Milton Nascimento - O Que Sera (Brazil)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfYbMjbadKY

Ha! I knew of those songs, but thanks to you I'm seeing some of those videos for the first time!

    Hope you've enjoyed them posts : 0)

Edit: How could I forget that one? ; ) What with you, of all people, asking this question, lol!
