  • What do you think of the Female Artist of the Day [64]?

Where've I been?! My computer is a little broken and I have a handful of questions all ready to go on there and was just too lazy to start from scratch again. Then I realized it's been a month since my last one, whoops. :p

    ARTIST: Katey Sagal

    - 1 album with The Group With No Name

    - 2 solo albums

    GENRE: Folk, Pop

    FACTOIDS:

    - Well who doesn't know Katey Sagal? Peggy Bundy in Married...with Children, Leela on Futurama, Gemma on Sons of Anarchy, a ton of other roles.

    - She did background vocals on a Gene Simmons album and sung backup for Bette Midler in the 70s. She also did some background vocals on an Olivia Newton-John song in the 80s.

    - I don't know how many people will remember this, but my parents used to watch the show so I didn't realize the pregnancy on MWC that turned out to be a dream was actually real. She ended up having a stillbirth in her 7th month.

HOW I FOUND HER: I was looking through (snooping) a friend's parent's music collection and found all three albums. It's not my type of music, but I liked her voice.

ALBUM I RECOMMEND FIRST: I think I liked 'Well...' the best. Keep in mind, the first album was released in 1976, the second in 1994, and the third in 2004 so they're all pretty different from each other. The first song is from the Sons of Anarchy soundtrack. Unfortunately I could barely find any recordings though.

Feel free to listen to all three, or pick the one that looks best! Whatcha think?

"Bird on a Wire" from SoA (2010)

    ARTIST: Chibi

    - 4 studio albums with The Birthday Massacre

    - 1 live album with The Birthday Massacre

    GENRE: Synthpop/rock

    FACTOIDS:

    - They're from Canada.

    - Nobody really knows what Chibi's real name is. She's kept it a secret for over 10 years I guess.

HOW I FOUND THEM: Heh, they were one of the first bands introduced by Rock&Pop to me at the time.

ALBUM I RECOMMEND FIRST: I'd say start with the first 'Nothing and Nowhere', although my personal favorite is their newest.

Merry Christmas guys. I'll be sure to toast all of you a long, happy life! One at a time of course, one sip isn't much fun ;)

    ARTIST: Jem

    - 2 solo albums

    GENRE: Pop

    FACTOIDS:

    - She's from Wales.

    - She helped write "Nothing Fails" (which later ended up on Madonna's 'American Life').

    - She holds a law degree from the University of Sussex.

    - Her music has been featured in (not a full list by any means): The O.C., Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Medium, Monster-In-Law, Ultraviolet, Eragon....

    - Normally I don't really care about age, but she's 35. I'd always thought she was much younger.

HOW I FOUND HER: I actually didn't. At the time my roommate and I had a little competition to see who could find the saddest songs, heh, and she played "Missing You" for me. Ended up trying out the album, really liked it. She kind of reminds me of Lily Allen sometimes.

ALBUM I RECOMMEND FIRST: 'Finally Woken'

  • What do you think of the Female Artist of the Day [59]?

ARTISTS: Sarah Egglestone & Tracey Pacham

    - 2 albums with ATC

    GENRE: Dance pop

    FACTOIDS:

    - Sarah is from Australia. Tracey is from England. (The guys are from New Zealand and Italy)

    - You might remember "Around The World (La La La La La)" from these guys, they were definitely a one hit wonder. Well the song that shot them - briefly - to stardom was actually a cover from a Russian group called Ruki Vverh.

    - Technically the name is A Touch of Class; they were taken to court by popular DJ ATB and had to change ATC.

    - The group was only together for three years.

HOW I FOUND THEM: I was like ten when "Around The World" came out. C'mon.

ALBUM I RECOMMEND FIRST: Well I wouldn't exactly say they're the album type ya know? 'Planet Pop' is the only one I heard, I'm not even going to bother with the other one. It's Aqua 2.0 ... and Aqua wasn't so hot to begin with. If you weren't a kid or pop-lover of the 90s, feel free to skip over this one.

    - 4 albums with Alice In Videoland

    GENRE: Electropop

    FACTOIDS:

    - She's from Sweden.

HOW I FOUND HER: ehh Pandora maybe. At first I thought they were a bit too cartoon-y, but I ended up liking some of their stuff.

ALBUM I RECOMMEND FIRST: I haven't heard the newest one as it's only been released on iTunes so far. But so far my favorite is 'Outrageous!'

NOTE: Apparently I put 56 in Polls&Surveys - didn't even notice! Thanks for pointing that out brian :) Here's a link to it if anyone is interested:

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Agwpf...

ARTIST: Alicia Cook, better known as Alicia Keys

    - 4 studio albums

    - 1 live album

    GENRE: R&B, Pop, Soul

    FACTOIDS:

    - She's from Hell's Kitchen.

    - She has appeared on screen and lent her voice more than a few times - Charmed, Sesame Street, The Backyardigans, an Elmo Christmas special, The Nanny Diaries, The Secret Life of Bees, and was even on The Cosby show in the 80s when she was four. Just to name a handful.

-She graduated valedictorian from the Professional Performing Arts School at 16.

    - Her first recorded song was "Dah Dee Dah (Sexy Thing)", which was in the first Men In Black movie.

    - Kylie Minogue is a fan of Alicia's. That tickled me :p

HOW I FOUND HER: I liked her singles as a kid (her first album came out when I was ten) but it wasn't until I actually picked up an album last year that I fell in love with the music.

ALBUM I RECOMMEND FIRST: Start at the beginning with 'Songs In A Minor' and continue from there. I don't care for her 3rd one and the 4th one is a bit weak, but the first two are top notch.

  • What do you think of the Female Artist of the Day [56]?

    ARTIST: Alesha Dixon

    - 4 albums with Mis-Teeq

    - 3 solo albums

    GENRE: Pop, R&B

    FACTOIDS:

    - She's from England.

    - As mentioned, she was 1/3 of Mis-Teeq. She appears to have done the best out of the group solo-wise.

    - Something I found interesting: Alesha, along with a group of other celebrities including Cheryl Cole (Girls Aloud), climbed Kilimanjaro for charity. The mountain isn't one of the hardest to climb, but it took them a week to get to the top. The temperature was around 0 degrees Fahrenheit near the top and oxygen levels were half of that found at sea level. Some of the team suffered from altitude sickness and of course the random aches and discomfort to be expected. It was said that Alesha particularly was in a lot of pain. They ended up raising the equivalent of about $5.5 million to help combat malaria in Tanzania.

    - She participated in the 5th season of Strictly Come Dancing (the show Dancing With The Stars is based on). She and her professional dancing partner Matthew Cutler won, and so far she has the highest average score of any contestant to ever be in the show. She became a judge in the 7th season.

HOW I FOUND HER: Of course I listened to Mis-Teeq on the radio a few years ago, but I didn't become aware of her specifically til about a year or two ago thanks to Youtube.

ALBUM I RECOMMEND FIRST: I haven't heard her newest album, but I like 'The Alesha Show'.

    ARTIST: Anjulie

    GENRE: Pop

    FACTOIDS:

    - She's from Canada.

    - She co-wrote Fefe Dobson's "I Want You".

    GENRE: Alternative rock

    FACTOIDS:

    - She's from Florida.

    - Some of JOJ's music is in the 98 movie Wicked, starring Julia Stiles. I saw the movie one day on the Lifetime channel when I was sick. It's deliciously dramatic, about a woman who gets murdered and her teenage daughter who seduces her own father.

    - Jessicka makes a brief cameo as an art student in the movie Ellie Parker (starring Naomi Watts).

    - They got their start when they opened for Marilyn Manson in 1992. Their name was originally Jack In Jill; he suggested the current name to them.

HOW I FOUND HER: Someone, probably from R&P, linked me to a Youtube vid of JOJ a few years ago. I guess they're the chick version of those depressing, rebellion bands we used to listen to in high school, but they're fun to listen to every now and then.

ALBUM I RECOMMEND FIRST: JOJ's 'Clear Hearts Grey Flowers' or Scarling.'s 'Sweetheart Dealer'. Me, I like Scarling. more but to each his own.

Feel free to listen to all four, or pick the one that looks best! Whatcha think? (The first link starts about 20 seconds in)

  • What do you think of the Female Artist of the Day [46]?

By request! I was holding out for her new album, but then I realized that would just cause more links and I'm already up to 5 heh. What are your other favorites by her?

    ARTIST: Robyn

    - 6 albums

GENRE: Electropop, Synthpop, Dance pop, R&B (early)

    FACTOIDS:

    - She's from Sweden.

    - She recorded the theme song to some Swedish TV show when she was 12 (in 1991) and her first single at the age of 16 (first album at 17).

    - She became a UNICEF ambassador at the age of 20.

HOW I FOUND HER: Anyone who's a fan of electropop or similar music gets directed toward Robyn sooner or later. Her music is definitely different, lol. Hit and miss with me. Not a fan at all of her earlier stuff, but her newer songs are very cool.

ALBUM I RECOMMEND FIRST: Stay away from the first three, the songs are like Spice Girl fillers. And the SG weren't so hot to begin with. After this album, she decided to leave her label because they weren't liking what she was making. Her 4th album (and following ones) is a lot different than what else she had released. Anyway, I recommend 'Robyn' (the 4th one) to start off, but her 5th and 6th are good too and I'm looking forward to the next one. Should be released next month.

Feel free to listen to all five, or pick the one that looks best! Whatcha think?
