Is there a polite to ask a coworker about their pay?
Me and a fellow coworker are about to be let go within a week, bad economy and all. I'm kind of curious though if HR has been lowballing me in comparison to the other coworkers or at least know where I feel I should stand. Is there a polite way to ask my coworker, who my relationship is pretty professional with, what she was making as well? Since this tends to be a sensitive topic.

Well I wouldn't, not unless she's a really, really close friend. Also, alot of companies have specific rules against asking or telling coworkers about pay rates. Even if you are getting laid off, your company's HR department could tell any prospective employers "no", when asked if you are eligible for rehire.
I would try something like http://www.payscale.com/ or http://www.bls.gov/ instead.
These sites can give you information regarding a job's title, description, education requirements, etc.,etc., as well as what the lowest, highest and average pay levels for that specific job are locally and nationwide.

No. there is no polite way to ask because it's none of your business.
Why does it matter now anyway? If you're all being let go, what you should be worrying about is what your NEW pay is going to be. Several online job site will tell you what the average salary for you job is in your area. That's what you should be looking at. What your co-worker is making has nothing to do with you.

Yes.
It is best to strengthen your relationship with your co-worker (professionally) before you ask.
It is also best if you tell her your pay before asking her, as that will cancel out some of the wrong assumptions.

Never a good idea, like asking someone what their SS number is or how much they have in their bank account.

no, thats one thing that should not be discussed.
Usually when someone new is hired they do make more than current employees it's just the way it is.

no, how much you make is a big secret in society. there is always someone jealous. Bet you don't know how much the union trades make? it's a secret, because if we all knew, we'd be pissed.

It is never appropriate to ask a co-worker what his/her salary is. This is private infomation and should remain so.
