Can i get a prescription for anti-depressants/insomnia tablets on the NHS without a psych assessment?
I've suffered from depression for over 8 years, but have only taken antidepressants twice, (for a couple of weeks each time) it was my choice to stop taking them.
I have now decided that i would like to try them properly as i believe i'm reaching quite a low point... unable to sleep, no energy, no appetite.
I was wondering if i could get a prescription for anti-depressants or even something for insomnia from my GP without having to be evaluated.
Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Your GP can prescribe anything.
If you inform him that you don't feel you require therapy, then he\she should be able to start you on an anti-depressant.
As far as your insomnia goes, it likely is related to your depression, so I doubt that your doc will prescribe you another drug for that.
Source(s): SSRI's can take over a month to start working, so unless you are experiencing bad side effects, then stick with them for 4 weeks and then let your doc know you might need to try another SSRI. It can take SEVERAL drugs before you get the right one, so be patient. - SparklesLv 61 decade ago
Hi,
Your GP doesnt need to carry out a long drawn-out,vague assessment to identify weather or not you need anti-depressants. Recently I finally decided to seek medical help for my depression and I just gave my dr a brief outline of my situation and how I've been feeling. She then listed some symptoms and asked how often I experienced them. If you go to your doctors about depression it needn't take any longer than if you were going regarding a psychical problem.
You might want to ask your doctor to refer you to a counsellor or for cbt. People are more likely to recover from depression if they have a combination of medication and a talking therapy. No anti-depressant is a magic happy pill.
Good luck x

With no prescription I guess there isn't any legal way to get it.Furthermore you do need to get a prescription because they are not all the same and only a doctor can prescribe you the most suitable for you.Don't do it yourself but ask a doctor.

Not very likely.
No practitioner worth his salt - or who values his license - will prescribe legend drugs or controlled substances without a thorough evaluation.

I went to my doc and he prescribed me fluoxetine without having to have an assesment (I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and he thought these might help, so far they havent). Good luck
