There is nothing illegal in having multiple demat accounts in your name. You can trade without any restriction, but you are not allowed to apply to an IPO using multiple demat accounts in your name.

Earlier you could have as many as Demat A/c However NSE has put restrictions and therefore eachone will have only one account.This has been done as per SEBI guidelines.

YES u can have as many deman account u want but u will have to pay annual charges for all the account.
