Is a harley davidson considered as a heavy bike?
yesterday me and my friends had an argument about which is a heavy bike, a harley davidson or a Bike which they use for racing in motoGP something like that. I was saying that a harley davidson is a heavy bike and the bike which they use for racing a sports bike. My friends were saying that the sports bike is called a heavy bike but it isn't heavy and that a harley davidson is heavy but isn't called a heavy bike.
Plz tell me who is in the right and who is in the wrong.

from a racer's viewpoint, and you can check the classes at ccsracing, anything under 400 lbs or so is a "lightweight" class. Doesn't matter the cc's, it's all based on weight, and power to weight ratio is applied.
Heavy motorcycles to the racers are all other machines. There is no Heavyweight class. Just lightweight and "heavy" bikes.
But yes, a Harley is heavy. Most bikes Harley makes weigh about double a "heavy" race bike. Buell, a division of HD, run in the lightweight class.

I am a small female and I own a Heritage Softail Classic. This is the bike I used when I started and I was also taught how to ride on this bike. It is lower to the ground than a sportster. It is heaver but the weight is lower and seems more balanced a sportster is taller and slimmer. I was told by a guy that on a sportster because it is lighter it will get more "flighty" when you go fast. The Heritage Classic does not. The Classic has nice size saddlebags. I put engine guard bars on it so if I let it fall over it will not hurt the bike. As far as weight a sportster weighs a little over 400 pounds and a classic weighs around 700 pounds. Both are heavy. The engine guard bars will stop it from falling all the way over so it is not hard to get it back up.

I consider a Harley Davidson a heavy bike, along with all other touring and cruiser bikes.
Sport bikes are built more like light weight racing bikes.
As a comparison:
A 2009 Harley Davidson Road King has a dry weight of 775 pounds.
A 2009 Suzuki Hayabusa has a dry weight of 485 pounds.
Look at the numbers. Which one do you think is heavier?
If the term is is used as a term as to how cool, well, like wow man, like I haven't heard the word heavy used like this since like back in the 60's man.

Your friends were using 'heavy' as an adjective for powerful or even cool - not in the sense of weight. Harleys weigh more than sports bikes QED. That's what it meant when they said "a sports bike is called a heavy bike but it isn't heavy and that a harley davidson is heavy but isn't called a heavy bike".
'Heavy' is just the new 'slick'. Or as we used to say at school 'mental wicked'. Good luck with the home boys.

By weight, a Harley is a heavy machine compared to a MotoGP machine. By weight my 1800 Goldwing is a heavy machine compared to a MotoGP machine.
Every builder of racing vehicle strives to produce a machine as light as possible. They want the best power to weight ratio as possible within the needs of the racing event.

Dressed Harley's are heavy. Sport bikes are light.

Depending on what model Harley would depend on if it's heavy, However, As a rule, A sport bike is as light as they can be, which makes sense if you want speed.

Is your friend confusing Heavy with Naked.....
My Road Glide is not light! It is a heavy bike. It weighs 2 to 3 times as much as my Yamaha enduros.

motoGP is no where near heavy....they range from 125cc to 1000cc
and they're the lightest thing you'll ever ride....b/c racing = weight reduction...
harleys on the other hand is cruisers.....and they weight TONS!!!
they're both heavy in SIZE, CC, and WEIGHT~

The Harley Davidson was designed and first built in the early 1900's as a two wheeled agricultural tractor and in 2008 things haven't changed its still an over Weight tractor built for people who don't know any better.
To call them heavy is an understatement, lumbering beasts would be a better description and to called any of them a sports bike is a joke.
