humane Society took my sons dog away to put him down.?

My son moved out to with 3 guys. they got a dog, shar pai and for 3 weeks no problems. then he was acting weird, one kid try to pick him up to hold him, he attacked him, he got stitches. two days later, the dog did it again. same guy, and then, the same guy was arguing with his brother, when the stopped he went to his room the dog starting growling out him, my son was there had no problems with the dog so he got between the two and told the dog NO, and down and the dog attacked him(my son) and he was bit all over and may need surgery on the thumb if the swelling don't go down. my son very upset don't think the dog should be put down. he thinks the guy who had him first abused the dog. I think the dog don't like a lot of people around and don't like noise. my son says he loves the dog and he deserves an second chance with someone that can train him, he is 3 yrs old the dog.oct 2nd they will put him down. should we fight for this dog to be saved and find him a home, or do you think there is something wrong with him??

Update:

i thank you all for your advice. this dog was for all four of the boys in the house. my son just was more attached to the dog. the ages are 20 to 18 my son is 18.he been brought up with dogs all his life and we never gave up on our pets no matter how much hassel one is.this is why he wont give up on this dog. even though he was avictim too. he was not teased, my son seen it the dog act but, there were people in the house which i felt the dog felt threaten and didnt like all the noise etc. still no excuse.out of four boys he went after the same one, each time until my son tried to command him to stop.the one he bite was the one he sleept in the same room. so he should of been closer to that boy as his owner.hate for any living thing to be abused or put down. i am trying for a rescue place until i run out of time. thanks everyone for your help.

Update 2:

the guy that gave the dog to the boys said he has kids and couldnt keep him. he also said the dog was little aggressive gets run of the house with time. i think this guy new he had problems. such a terrible thing to give a dog, knowing he may hurt you. this man didnt take care of this dog and get him help.people are so mean to animals.

    Hello,

At this point I feel you should not fight for this dog. The Humane Society has a right to take this dog and even if you where to fight for this dog this dog would be deemed as an aggressive dog. Which would mean you would have to place signs all over your yard or the new owner’s yard with those kinds of signs.

The problem here is a few things. The dog could have a chemical imbalance or yes the dog could have been abused and yes VERY EXPENSIVE behavior modification can be placed on this dog HOWEVER the problem with behavior modification is that just like with people dogs can turn back into that aggression dog at any time even after that training. You can never have that dog around children and the dog must be around someone that understands canine body language at all times. With Shar Pai’s the body language is a bit harder to read than a German Shepherd or a breed like that. Because they have no tail they have a wrinkled body and it’s harder to see facial expressions as well or even hackles being raised on their back (which is their hairs on their back).

So honestly in my Professional opinion I feel putting this dog down is your best bet and if you choose to go get another dog make sure you read a few books on dog behavior or get someone to pick a dog for you. This way you will not have this problem again.

Also in the future never ever place you face in another dogs face this is considered a threat to them.

this dog attacked 3 times within a few days...

If the dog was "acting weird" I'd say there is something wrong with the dog. Short of running all kinds of medical tests to have the dog checked for health problems.. personally I think its best to put this dog down. A dog that will bite is a huge liability. Not many homes can deal with him, no rescue will take him because of the bite history. What if he ends up with a family with kids and bites one of the kids?

I strongly encourage that your son consider getting the rabies vaccination. If the dog was "acting strange" then its possible he may have had rabies.. they did not have the dog long, and the medical/vaccination history of the dog may have been sketchy.

Ummm. Ya. I don't know what to say, really. Do you not realize the gravity of this situation? Your son's dog has caused two people severe injuries. Your son is lucky he isn't getting his *** sued.

Fortunately, human life and limbs come before a dog's. You can try to fight for the dog. He will be listed and registered as a "vicious and dangerous animal" and will be under strict regulation. One more mistake, and your son will have no choice in what happens to the dog. Also, the dog only has a chance if your son is going to keep it. The humane society cannot, in good conscience, adopt out such a liability.

BTW punctuation is a wonderful thing. Try using it sometime.

Sigh, i hate problems like this...

Has anyone seen the way the boy that first got bit interact with the dog? Was he teasing him or being rough??? It's possible he was acting to what he thought was a threat and responded acordingly.

Also, it's sounds like this dog has issues and it would be best for him to be humanely put down before he bites someone REALLY bad.

Some dogs aren't retrainable, i had to put down 4 out of 6 american bulldogs that i raised from three weeks old because they weren't trustable. they were never abused in anyway, but they had mental problems and would bite without warning.

  • Im not against the dog by all means, i love animals. I think that you could have a standard test done to evaluate the dog's temperment or maybe the humane society already did one? I can't imagine they would just put it down without a reason. They wouldn't even try to help animals without cause right? If worse comes to worse, i don't think being passed around from family to family will help the dog if it is overly aggressive. Do what's right for the animal and remember it was in the dog's best interest.

Sorry if this dog is so dangerous to cause that much harm , he would be unsafe for any home. May be he was abused but it apparently did permanent mental damage to him. Some times it is best for all involved for the dog to be put down. The dog can't be happy with that much hostility in him, and any one with him would not be safe either. Don't know what else to say, may be you should let things go the way they are.

I dont think the dog should be put down. Something terrible has been done to the dog. I dont know what but something that screwed with its mind.

I think if your son is willing to get the training that dog deserves, fight it. If not, the dog is in enough suffering as it is. It is obviously terrified of something, it could be the noise.

Personally with the knowledge I have about dogs and their behavior, I would fight it, but the places do sometimes disregard the order or the fact that the case is pending and will put the dog down anyway.

Here is an amazing dog trainer. If you can get to here after the dog is back in your sons hands, please do.

I agree with nixie on contacting Dogtown. They rehabilitated many of the michael vick dogs.

Once a dog starts biting people, it's not going to stop.

A big worry if it also attacked it's owner, what if next time it attacks a small child?

It's a sad situation but I think the dog is best put to sleep. Sounds like some awful person has abused it in the past but it's not worth risking the dog attacking other people.

i think that it might be safer to put the dog down. I tend to think that once a dog starts biting people its going to keep biting people and you wouldnt want a child to try to pet the dog and the dog attack the child. I think its better to be safe than sorry in the long run.

  • Why??? Why would you even think of fighting for a dog that is violent and vicious toward your own son and other people??

The Humane Society is correct to want to put him down!
