The narrative about last night's debate is starting to set in: Obama was presidential, McCain was petulant...?

Polls taken after the debate show that people thought Obama won last night's debate.

Was it the angry, sneering, and contemptuous attitude that McCain showed at the debate that left people with a poor impression of him? Was it that McCain was so small that he refused to look at Obama during the whole debate, even when shaking his hand?

I thought Obama did better, but I am notorious for not correctly evaluating things like that.

    Still, maybe....

i don't know why anyone is surprised by this. mccain behaved the same way during the republican primary debates. all he did was make snarky little comments at mitt romney and mike huckabee (his biggest challengers) and never really articulated his own positions. which was very disappointing for me. i had a decent amount of respect for mccain and expected a lot more from him. i think the real mccain is starting to show through.

If "impressions" were important, we could call Central Casting and get somebody, anybody better than these two.

This is the prsidency of our COUNTRY we're talking about here.

Do we really care if the guy is cuddly and adorable.

You can bet your @ss that the KGB and al Qaeda don't.

I can't stand the f-ing sight of Obama's sneering face as he spouts fairy tales about economics and foreign policy.

He has NO idea what he is talking about and his supporters seem to have NO idea of what they aren't understanding.

McCain probably wanted to yell at the guy.

After what he has given for this country, it must be maddening to see someone willing to throw it all away and to jeopardize it all for personal ambition.

The sight of Obama's angry face on that split screen and his constant interruption were disgraceful.

The accounts of his behavior at the White House meeting this week were shocking.

The Washington Post described him "hectoring the participants," including the President, Treasury Secretary, and Republican Leadership, causing the meeting to blow up and deteriorate into a shouting match.

If you think that's "presidential," you'll love the movie "Dr. Strangelove."

    Obama is deranged.

Obama showed he is well able to lead. He humored McCain several times which shows Obama has respect for others while McCain showed us his sneering contempt of anyone who dares reproach him. Obama will bring a dignified America back whereas McCain will keep the oppressor attitude which is making us look like fools and terrorists to the rest of the world.

Petulant. A very good descriptive word for McCain last evening. I noticed he had taken a position of talking down to Obama instead of with. And did avoid eye contact. I thought that may be due to his own embarrassment of his actions that week.

I liked the fact Obama demonstrated some fire. Without being obnoxious. Flat out telling McCain he had been wrong about the Iraq invasion/occupation was good.

I hope Obama continues his policy of not climbing into the gutter with his opponents. Clinton's campaign of character assassination didn't work, and McCain can only further infantalize American politics.

Obama is twice the man McCain is.

Sen. McCain honestly reminds me of every grandfathers that i've encountered in my life, including mine. Full of wisdom, passionate and very engaging particularly in story telling.

On the other hand, Sen. Obama is very much like a lot of responsible fathers, or "dads" in every family. Strong, passionate, hardworking, focused and a dependable provider.

mccains foreign policy is the bush doctrine, he had little chance of winning last nights debate which was a must win. He showed better than I anticipated, but polls clearly indicate obama was victorious. There is virtually no chance mccain can come back now.

I thought obama could wrap things up this week with a good showing. He didn't have a great showing, but i think he finished mccain off anyway.

Clearly McCain was unable to look at Obama, while Obama spoke to the camera and to McCain. The old man looked grumpy, Obama was energized. The old man spoke of the past, Obama looked to the future. The old man stuck to his distorted account of his and Obama's Senate record, while Obama gave solutions.

The old man kept trying to say that Obama lacked experience while Obama himself looked and sounded Presidential.

This is what people saw, this is why Obama will win in November.
