Why do we live a Big Lie?

All of your life, you've been lied to. You've been told what life is supposed to be about. Grow up, do well in school, make friends, get a girlfriend or boyfriend, get a good job, get married, get a nice house and have kids. Watch tv, go to church, vote, find some hobbies to entertain you. Donate money to charity. Go on vacation. Get old, retire, spend time with the grandkids. Look back on your life with nostalgia, look forward to the afterlife of your choosing. This is what you're supposed to do, this is what normal people do. This is what everyone else is doing. Oh sure, there are a few aberrations here and there, sometimes some people slip off this track, but you can get back on at any time. Of course, when you actually look at the world around you, you may see something entirely different. See that young married couple living next door, with the wife gardening in the front yard while the kids play out back? She's snowed under with Xanax all the time, without which she'd be in a continuous state of anxiety. And her 6 year old son, he's following in mom's footsteps already, taking his daily dose of Ritalin to keep him tranquil enough to sit still all day at school. She stopped sleeping with her husband several years ago, but that's ok, cause he sneaks off a couple times a week and has sex with street prostitutes in the back seat of his car, or a nearby motel. He feels a bit bad for them, and tips them extra. His favorite prostitute is always glad to see him, because he's pleasant enough and an easy $75. Too bad they can't all be like him. She gets beaten up and raped by johns multiple times a year, but that's ok, she can handle it, cause even at its worst this job is still better than what she went through as a child. Besides, there's no other way she could support her crack cocaine habit. And the cop who tries to arrest her, last night he arrested the neighborhood marijuana dealer, then went home and got nice and legally drunk on jack daniels. And the cop's daughter, the pretty high school cheerleader, sneaks off and vomits after every meal so she won't get fat.But these are all small scale problems. Don't forget that, several times a century, often enough to happen at least once during the average human lifetime, all the most powerful nations of the world divide up into sides and begin slaughtering anyone they can find on the opposing side by the millions. This is agreed by all to be unfortunate but necessary. And the city you live in, if you're in a western country and living in a city, has already been targetted by some country's nuclear weaponry. A few pushes of the right buttons, and you'll be vaporized, or survive and live in some radioactive wasteland. But that's ok, because it probably won't happen in the immediate future, so you might as well go out and buy the week's groceries. Beneath the thin veneer of civilization lies a howling madness, and the average normal human being has the ability to commit genocide during the day, then come home and tuck the kids in at night, or to ignore the pain of a billion people in misery while mowing the lawn or doing christmas shopping. The Big Lie is that all of the problems of human life are separate. If you compartmentalize them all, you can convince yourself that once you lose that 40 pounds, or get more money, or get your husband to stop beating you, or finally kick that addiction, you'll be a normal happy person like everyone else. And once you get the right politician elected, or win the war, or convert the infidels to your religion, the world will be a happy place. The problems of life are all symptoms of the same cause. The locks on your doors which you need to keep out burglars, the schoolyard bully, the serial killer, the drug addict, the drug dealer, the billionaire who thinks he's being exploited by the poor, the millions of soldiers fighting for peace, the enslavement or slaughter of entire races of people, and your own unhappiness, all are interconnected. They are all part of one problem. I wish I could define the problem for you, or offer a solution. Human beings seem to have a basic design flaw. We're a ****** up species, striving to be healthy and happy while simultaneously destroying ourselves and each other in a million different ways. The only positive note I can end this on is that it's better to understand all this than to be

ignorant of it, I think.

Update:

My real question is why we abide a lie in lame secret instead of being open and accepting of it?

Dexter, I missed your tv show, which I am glad the new season just started. I never knew you also wrote questions, long rambling stream-of-conscious questions, In YA. Go kill someone, I am sure everything will be fine then.

Definitely. Especially people that lie a lot. The easiest way to keep track is to believe that everything actually happened. I used to lie like crazy when I was a teen, to stand out and be impressive and seem more interesting. I stopped a long time ago because there is no use in it. When l think back though, I still sometimes have to think REALLY hard to remember the truth and what actually happened because I did such a good job of convincing myself of my own lies. Very sad.

Well! is all I can say, I believe most of this I knew, but the Bomb is another thing. I think that most people accept this however they don't allow it override their minds and continue with their daily lives, but how can we be saved from this is the question? Since the beginning of time of Adam and Eve there has been a thing called denial of God and his rules, and since that time there has been death, pain, and suffering. As a person I would want to think that at some point mankind would all get together especially the leaders of the world, and call out Merciful Father in Heaven help us, but I doubt it. First we have this issue with Jesus being the son and if he really existed, then there is people who worship Buddha, then there are the Islamics who pray to the temple in the east to Mohammad. Then theres this religion Called Yoruba with many Gods. then the Indiana's The Catholics etc..... Therefore there can not be any peace. Therefore Jesus is coming back to separate the Goats from the sheep. Until that time comes there is going to be that confusion you wrote about, yet humorous Then you wonder why the lie. By the way I like how you wrote that consider writing a book.

It is easy to see, or believe that all life is like that . . . it isn't.

Life is good, or, if it wasn't at least good in proportion to bad it wouldn't exist because ours is the only species capable of making itself extinct. So far someone says "no" when we get to that point.

is it ignorance to think like this?

Would you save a baby who is about to fall into a well, or, at least, be afraid for it? All humans, instinctively, feel this way (even the ones who, after thinking about it would laugh).

If they tell you life is Hell they are doing it for a reason . . . stop listening and start looking around yourself, not through the glass window of the television, or the written word, or the gossip and the real ignorance of isolation, but through your own experience, your sight, and your own heart. If you are one of the people in your scenario, break the chain.

Its called a 'civilization' and all of those individual things you listed are the 'memes' or rules/beliefs that make up civilization. Over time the memes change and so does our civilization. One example is the meme that people with dark skin and curly hair were inferior to people with light skin and straight hair. That meme, and all of its dependent memes are changing. It will be decades until the memes change entirely.

You are not a slave to the memes of your civilization! You do not need to do all of the things you think are wrong. The people who want to follow the memes won't be too happy with you but, here's the thing, if your collection of memes works well for you AND you are able to convince other people to follow your memes, more or less, than you will have your own sub civilization.

    Good luck.

I believe that people live in the way that they do beacuase poeople want to be happy. Collectively our society seems to believe that to be happy you must be married, not overweight, have a nice house get a good job etc. These days people are so concerned with what makes them happy that no one even takes the time to help each other anymore. People believe the lies that goverments tell them because they want to fell secure i think that alot of people in the back of the minds think that our government has been lying to us and does not have our best interest at all in mind for us. People in America are so complacent they dont seen to care what their government is doing in their names all over the world, Its crazy that we are so manipilated as a population. I think somepeople know the lies and are happy accepting them becuase they feel secure, and buy into the governments propaganda.

u seem disturbed a bit but i dont think life is a "lie" this is how we do things on the western side of the world. If you choose to live differently then thats your choice only close minded people will shun you . But the family is an institution we need it in society the whole american dream its what you do ith your family that counts what you gave us was a scenario. i understand your case but your argument is very loose

The simple answer is that the majority of the world is simply not ready to wake up. To do so would mean having to accept that each one of us is "God". Which would also mean taking responsibility for that.

So instead, we have chosen (allowed) the lie to perpetuate for the past 12,500-odd years. But now, guess what? Like Sleeping Beauty, (or Neo) we are finally awakening and going 'hang on a minute, something's not right here'...

Whos not open and accepting of it? The politicians? They aren't because they r in it for the money, same with dr.'s etc.....they r the people that know the truth the absolute most and they definitely dont want the poor to know how hard they work to keep them down.

Lots of people are aware that we are living a lie. Reality bites, eh..? I guess all one can do is try to live as logically & happily as possible.

Make your 'little corner of the world' as comfortable & serene & happy as possible. It is pointless to attempt to 'change the world' - and not worth the frustration ; - )

Relax, eat, drink & be merry - we are only visitors here. And for so very brief a time.
