Laird is the Scottish Equivalent of Lord, although is a title in its own right not just used to address someone with.
This title is more commonly attached to land rather than a family, although the holder of the title is likely to be the head of the family.

"Lord" is an official title of nobility which, in the UK at least, carried with it certain voting rights. (As in the "House of Lords"...)
"Laird" is a hereditary title for the owner of an estate in Scotland, and who is usually the head of an identified Scottish clan. And "Laird" has never been considered a title of nobility.
