It is an warning that people use to threaten others. Children reach that age when 'time-out' is no longer taken seriously. It really is a clever concept when forcing others to do what you want... even in modern times when people are well educated.

This is an interesting question, since there are 1 Hebrew, and 3 greek words, not sharing the same meaning in the hebrew and greek, all translated to the single english word "hell".

    Hebrew:

    sheol --- means the grave

    Greek

    Hades --- means the grave

Gehenna --- means "the valley of hinnom", or scripturally the lake of fire.

Tartaros --- The deepest part of the grave (IE a VERY deep hole), scripturally used only once, and is stated as the place where the angels that sinned were put until judgment.

Unfortunately, I can truthfully state due to the "chosen" interpretations several things truthfully.

    1. All men will go to hell, including Christians. (grave)

    2. No man will go to hell. (tartaros)

    3. Only the unfaithful will go to hell. (gehenna)

Don't think this is funny? Good, neither do I, as a believer.

Think it is funny? It is an example of "translation based upon traditional word usage" etc... Basically, tradition over truth.

This should not shake any believers faith, at least that has any depth whatsoever. It does however show the need for an accurate and FAITHFUL re-translation, which I have yet been unable to find.

The bible description of hell, a place that burns forever and ever, in the center of the earth, doesn't seem to be a place where those souls that are there are going to have a lot of time to have any comforting thoughts. On the contrary, it is a place of eternal punishment. Some muse, that in seeing the Holy and true God at the Great White Throne Judgment, yes, they will believe, and bow their knees...but also see His true majesty and even agree that His judgments are true and righteous. How did the writers of the N.T. 2000 years ago know that the center of the earth really is molten and exceedingly hot come to think of it?

IT is a place of torment and you should avoid it at all cost.

Did you know that if you go to hell it is your own fault. You can choose heaven or hell. IT is all up to you. God provided a way to get to heaven and you probably have read about it many many times. so what is your decision? heaven or hell?

For angels and demons, Hell is imprisonment on earth.

For humans, hell is simply the grave.

I don't know if hell is an actual place or if it symbolizes being away from God for all eternity. As I see it, it really doesn't matter. I don't believe in trying to get people to love Christ by scaring them into it. That is not love, that is fear. Instead, I try to let them know how much God loves them and wants to bless them if they will only turn to him.

I think people create their own hell through their misdeeds and guilt. If you've ever felt heavy inside thats what i'm talking about - weighing yourself down.

in a purely intellectual sense, i believe that hell is the complete absence of God's presence

in a practical sense, i will someday understand it from a distance, although i will never be there

it's a state of mind we can put ourselves in (a living hell), not a physical place...that is just a scare tactic used by religion to keep you hooked through doubt. You won't leave if you think you are going to burn for all eternity for it. Why not just go to church every sunday to be on the safe side, right?
