Can a bounced check from 4 years ago come back to haunt you? More details inside...?

Last week I wrote a check at my local grocery store (like I do every week) and it wasn't accepted. I called the number given to me to see why Telecheck declined to accept my check and was told that I have a bounced check from February of 2004 and none of my checks will be accepted until it is paid.

What I don't understand is this: That check was written 4 years ago when I banked with a different bank. That account was closed in April of 2006. That's right...2 years after this check 'bounced'. Also, I did not have a negative balance when I closed it. It was at $0. Plus, I go to this grocery store and write a check every single week, so why hasn't my check been declined in the past 2 years I've been going there?

I don't even know where to begin to get this figured out, so any advice would be helpful. Do I go to my old bank first? Or do I just argue with the peope at Telecheck about it?

Thanks for any advice!

Telecheck is the equivellant of Equifax, or any of the credit reporting systems.

You would need to pay the other check off and then, in writing, show proof of that and also request that you be removed from their system.

You are entitled to a free report from telecheck showing the details of this information that is negatively affecting you. Call them, or visit their website, to request the report. They will require the request in writing, I believe. Once you get the report you can then go about contesting it or clearing it up.

You have to handle it with telecheck. It has nothing to do with the bank. All telecheck does is verify if you have bounced checks or if the check written is not a normal amount for you, it doesn't verify if you have money in bank. You could have no money in the bank, and the check could run, you could have a mil in the bank and the check could get returned. As far as why now it is returning, who knows. It could be their system is that far behind, who knows. I find that odd. Calling the bank is usless, they have nothing to do with it.

It makes me wonder since you have been writing checks for years without the checks coming back, it may just be an error by the guy running it through. I hope I helped, it sounds like a pain in the butt to get fixed. Good Luck

I'm guessing the bank that carried the bad check just recently had their records sent to Telecheck. You might even see it on your credit report now.

I don't know about the USA but here in UK when you default, it goes on to a central computer owned by "experian" and will haunt you for evermore.

The way they think of it is the rest of society pays up , and it is tough for the defaulters.
