McCain in last night's debate, sexist? racist? ?

Did any one else notice that McCain tended to look at the questioner while answering a question only for the men, and he tended to turn away from female questioners? This was most conspicuous when the questioner was a young, black woman. And, when the questioner was a black man his response included the comment that "you likely never heard of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac before".

It sent a chill down my spine to see this. Any one else respond as I did?

Update:

I don't think that I am reading too much of this, I am simply responding to a sensitivity and awareness I developed after years as one of the first females in a male world. These days most dismissive and sexist actions are silent - but still deadly. I am shocked that McCain was not coached to avoid such behavior.

Update 2:

Karl - yes, I expect that he does turn away from his daughters when speaking "policy" - when compared to a policy conversation with his sons. Unfortunately sexism can exist even in loving relationships and does not stop at the workplace.

I agree. I noticed it too. And I think it's very dangerous to have all these conservatives above me who don't think it's a big deal (and, who give snide comments simply to lash out like a wounded animal, rather than an intelligent statement... there's a LOT of that going on lately).

The way McCain responded to certain people reflects how he feels about women and minorities. It's NOT something that should be ignored!

No and no. The young black man who he made the Fannie and Freddie comment to was YOUNG. He was just pointing out that it's POSSIBLE he may have never heard of those institutions before this crisis.

Seriously, how many on YA knew anything about them before all of this happened?

Well Mccain does believe that Freddie and Fannie is the cause of the down fall. Meaning the Poor and women.

What Mccain doesn't want you to know that it was AIG that cause the down fall of the housing Market. Something McCain is tied with his lobbyists friends and the Bail out.

No, I did not notice. I guess I was listening to his answers instead...

I sometimes wonder if peoples opinions would change if they just listened and didn't watch....I hate how everyone brings up what they see in a debate, but nobody talks about what they heard...which is the most important.

Oh yeah...there were a lot of patronizing and condescending statements as he always does, but it's more his BODY language that gives him away too.

You could tell he was really LIVID when Obama challenged him and just didn't take his guff too.

It's a good thing this man will never make it to the White House as PRESIDENT.

God help us all if that duo made it there...Psycho version of Jed and Elli Mae.

Did you hear of Freddie or Fannie before they fell apart?

Ya know, I like Obama and all that, but WHY do so many of his supporters constantly play the race card for no reason???

do you also assume that he turns away from the black girl he adopted when she asks a question?

I think you're to sensitive for politics.

I also think you're an Obama supporter.

  • Nope. Nice try though.
