Soy formula - please help, at the end of my rope!!!?
Okay ladies (and dads too)
I was told that my my girls have a milk protein allergy at about 4 weeks old b/c of the incredible fussiness, watery stools, and mucus and blood traces in stool...so we switched to Nutramigen and they seemed to do good for about a week and a half - now they are spitting up, crying while eating, have a skin rash on he face and upper chest area. Sometimes they eat great and other times it's a cryfest to eat. soon after eating we are fine - they are happy and play.
We have tried rice cereal for reflus and I stopped after a week b/c it gave them so much gas I thought it did more hurt than good...we have been taking prilosec for about a week and a half - and no big improvements so I am not super sure it's reflux...
Has anyone experienced this? Did you try soy formula? I know Nutramigen is easy to digest, but it contains a trace amount of milk product that is "broken down to be easily tolerated" for allergies.
I know they say if your baby is gaining weight and not dehydrated then you shouldn't switch...do you think it will do more harm than good???
I really want my happy babies back - am am at the end of my rope...

My daughter, son and both my nephews are lactose intolerant. My kids couldn't even tolerate breast milk (I am weaning my son at nine weeks because of this). All of our kids where on similac sensitive and it has worked great. It is milk based, but without lactose. Have you tried this? When I was a baby, I couldn't take even soy. Good luck and hang in there!

My son had the same problem and my Pediatrician put him of Similac Isomil Advance w/Iron. There is no milk products so it is easy to tolerate. My son gained weight normally after and has been happy ever since. Some woman have a problem with soy in general (opinions), but as a Nurse and Mom of 4, I think it was the best decision we ever made. Just make sure your Dr. knows about any switch and make the switch slowly. They can give you a chart on how to switch formulas. Good Luck!!

They may have a milk allergy, try the soy based formula first and then if you don't see any noticeable changes in a week, consult your pediatrician and He/She may suggest you try a lactose free formula like Similac Sensitive. I'm a Nurse Counselor for the W.I.C. program and some of the infants I have seen had similar problems and have done well with soy. We usually don't suggest other formulas until the parent has tried the milk based and soy based formulas first.

My son had this and here is what worked best. Soy Formula, Zantac twice a day (you need to give it two weeks to start working), and oatmeal in his formula. Oatmeal does not give them gas like rice cereal. If anything I would switch to the soy, and talk to your doctor about zantac. Good Luck and they will grow out of it!!!!

Ok, I would go to your doctor on this one. You never know they may not be able to handle milk at all. But you never know the soy might bother them to. Have you tried the gas drops? ( milicon drops i think)
