Why is Abortion an Issue every Election?

I thought it was settle in 1973 by the Supreme court. I think its just a ploy by both parties to because it triggers off strong emotions. We had 5, presidents that has been against this ruling and nothing has been done, isn't kind of obvious they are not going to do anything about it, so why do they keep bringing this up?

Please enlighten me, ty

It will be an issue for a long time to come as well. Its a vote getter. The people that run on an anti-abortion stance will never do anything about it because then they couldn't use it the next time elections came around. The republicans held the executive, legislative, and a majority of the Supreme Court from 2001-2007, and never did one thing about abortion. If they did, they'd lose their vote getter.

Abortion is here to stay folks. Like it or not. Dems are for choice, Reps are using it as an emotional vote getting machine.

If you vote on abortion, you're being duped. Its never going to change.

Much like the gay marriage bill in California, the abortion laws were created by Liberal Judges instead of Legislators.

Got it? No one got to vote on the issue. Which has a lot of people pissed off. Including myself, and I'm pro-abortion.

So it keeps coming up. You are 'sort' of correct. In a strange way BECAUSE the JUDICIAL overstepped it's bounds, the problem is in the Judicial court. Congress has never had enough votes to change the ruling, BUT if enough pro-Life Supreme Court Judges are appointed, Roe vrs Wade could be overturned and the Abortion issue could be put to a vote.

    Hence the candidates position matters.

Because the President appoints Supreme Court Justices, and the Court can overturn the 1973 decision.

It scares me that so many young persons take the right to chose for granted - and fail to appreciate that a new court decision could completely take this right away in the blink of an eye. This issue will continue as long as there are persons willing to fight it in court - unless Congress acts and rights new law.

You asked me to enlighten you; fine, I will.

SOME people in this country still have morals. Abortion is the biggest killer in the World. Abortion kills more people then accidents, disease, and war. And other countries have unfortunately followed our lead in abortion. Some people will not just sit idly by and not attempt to do anything about it. Is it unlikely that the abomination that is the Supreme Court Case Roe v Wade will be overturned? Yes, I'll give you that; it's unlikely. But is it impossible? No. And as long as the slaughter of millions of helpless, innocent babies continues; there will be people who will try to fight it to their last breath. Mos Def and Phoenix Quill were right in citing that conservative Supreme Court Justices could overturn the decision. After that, anything can happen. So no, nothing whatsoever at all is "settled". And if you and pro choice people (you yourself didn't specify an actual position in this question so I won't label you) think this issue is going to just go away, you are gravely mistaken.

I myself don't buy into this "the politicians don't really care about the issue they just want votes" line that some people have said. I firmly believe that many Republicans truly do have a passionate stance on the matter, including President Bush, Senator McCain, and Governor Palin. I do not think it's a vote getting ploy.

Plus, there's the matter of the character of the candidate. Many pro lifers (myself included) see abortion as murder and some pro lifers (myself included) see pro choice people as being immoral. Please note this does not describe every pro lifer. So if voters see a candidate as being moral on abortion; they may see the candidate as likely to be moral on other important issues as well, especially when life is at stake. They may see a candidate with what they view as having an immoral stance on abortion as likely to have an immoral stance on other issues, especially where life is at stake. It is both a matter of the candidate's character and a matter of principle.

Plus, this notion that it is a cut and dry matter is false. Yes, abortions are legal. But someone in a public office could vote on many issues concerning abortion; such as term stages in a pregnancy where abortion would be legal, weather partial birth abortion is allowed or not, weather minors would need parental consent for abortions or not, weather babies who survive abortion attempts will get a stay of execution or not (I apologize for my bias on that one), and of course funding for abortions. So abortions being legal is NOT a clear cut black and white issue; there are plenty of gray areas. And a candidate can make a difference in these areas.

So in other words nothing is settled at all; and any candidate could potentially have an effect on it.

In the time it took for me to write this post; more than 100 babies were slaughtered worldwide. In the time it took you to read it (if you did) a a few dozen were slaughtered worldwide. A moment of silence please.

But you are correct in saying that it triggers of strong emotions (as you can tell from my post).

It is still a touchy subject for many. Roe v Wade was decided in 1973 but there is a perception that women who get abortions are chronic aborters using abortion as their main source of birthcontrol. This is not true but you get the idea. No one has the right to determine whether a woman has to carry a baby that was conceived by incest or rape. That is inhumane. No one has an alternative. All you hear is Choose Life, but then what....there is no support for children who end up in the system or are handed over for adoption. It's a very flawed flawed system.

The supreme court judges are getting old, the conservatives feel its their chance to get a president who will appoint judges that will overturn roe v wade. But if Barack is president then its pretty much a dead issue, abortion won't be overturned for a long long time if Barack ends up being president.

Anytime there's a group of dumb people butting their noses into other people's business (while their lives are pretty crappy mind you) you get an issue in an election. Groups for it, groups against it.

I'll admit it, i'm against abortion. But you know what? I don't really think its my concern if someone else is for it and wants it. But most people disagree that it is my concern somehow, and no matter how dumb the majority is, it still rules. And these are the same people who vote for the man in office, which exlains GW's re-election.

Best way to manipulate the religious nuts into voting against their interests and for the interests of the rich.

You make sure that they think that the biggest issues are forcing their god on everybody in the public schools and all other public places, keeping gays from marrying and hopefully re criminalizing them so they all end up in prison, and eliminating not only abortion but all birth control to produce an army of poor slaves for the religious peoples malevolent god, the rich manipulators manipulating the religious right, and cannon fodder for their plans to conquer and enslave the entire world.

Because the one' who oppose it want the law back to the way it was the rest of the time before the change 35 years ago. I'ts only been passed for 35 years out of how many? The same reason if it ever wee changed back to how it was that the people on your side will fight to change it back to how it is now.

The real tragedy in this is the guy who's seed has been planted get's zero say in any of it.

Some of us actually believe an innocent human being is killed when there is an abortion. Since Roe v Wade, 53 million have died. At the minimum, each state should be able to regulate that issue.
