Turning right in USA when traffic lights on red (UK asking)?

The laws in each state vary, so, while in most, the driver is allowed to turn right on a red light AFTER stopping and it is safe, not all states allow this. You son should check with the local regulations.

The only inherent danger is if the driver is not paying attention to the cross traffic, or, misjudges the speed of the oncoming cross traffic. This is, unfortunately, often the case. That is why even the cross traffic, with the green light, should approach ANY intersection with caution.

It works really well, keeps the traffic flowing! You have to come to a halt before turning, and yield to traffic coming from the left, across the intersection, but basically yes, you can turn right on a red.

We in the UK cannot turn left on a red. Sometimes there is a turn left arrow that allows this, but basically it's not the same here.

Remember out there, the roads are a whole lot wider than in the UK so you get in lane, and go right when it's clear to do so.

For starters as your well in the know by now i expect they drive on the opposite side of the road so in a way we (UK people) should be able to turn left on a red light.

Why we are not aloud to do so god knows!

If its red you should be able to turn left but obviously proceed with caution as you should be joining traffic just like a slip road and you know how small they can be here lol.

Here green means just go right? well funny enough just round the corner from me i got an american situation where the light for turn left is red when there is crossing traffic but is green when oncoming traffic turns right to become oncoming traffic.

I swear there's a fault some where but if we can have it there surly we should have the rule in england to.

The difference here is we drive on the right side of the road. Turning right on a red light is only allowed because you are crossing minimal traffic. However, there are some instances where turns on red are forbidden..but they are usually marked that way.

Wow, I was unaware that driving anywhere would be that different. Is it because there is a turn at any time lane or somehting like that? I know here in Australia, often there is a slip lane to the side where you can turn left at any time with care.

Haha I love how everyone is just assuming that juist because thats how it is in America, thats how it will be eeverywhere else only on the left instead.

But I mean, here in OZ, only certain traffic lights are like that, if there is no extra lane that says to turn at any time, then you just have to wait for a green light.

Since we drive on the other side of the road here, turning right on a light is fine....but you have to yield!

For example, turning right in the US is like turning left in the UK...you're not crossing any traffic, so you're not in danger of hitting anyone.

Keeping in mind that the US drives on the opposite side of the road then in the UK most right turns are fine unless there is a sign that specifies otherwise. "No Turn On Red". And if they aren't this is the first I'm hearing about it.

In the US you can make a right hand turn on red usually once you have made a complete stop and you are clear of other cars. The only time you can't do this is when there is a no right hand turn sign.

Yes you can turn right on a red light but you most come to a complete stop first and check to make sure it is safe to proceed. Sometimes you may not be able to make a right on a red light because there will be a sign prohibiting such actions.

I'm sure you are aware that we drive on the right side, instead of the "correct" side. :) So right turn to us is a "tight turn" like left turn to you.

Yes, it's legal to turn right on red, given that there's no pedestrian on the crosswalk (or zebra crossing in UK), and you have to yield to the traffic going sideways, and the opposite traffic turning left (basically everyone else has right of way over you)
