How can I fix my suddenly flaky network connection?

Two days ago, my computer developed the hiccups. My 10/100 Ethernet card keeps connecting and disconnecting; "Local area connection: A network cable is unplugged" keeps appearing and disappearing in the Windows XP taskbar. I do get Internet access but it's (as you might guess) slow and has long pauses at times.

I've checked the cable connections, and the switch and router lights seem to be on as appropriate. I haven't changed anything on the system. Windows reports no IRQ conflicts on the network card.

What could be the problem, and how might I fix it?

    you can do several things

Try checking if the ethernet port on your computer is messed up. Get a laptop or another computer to connect to you're router to check if the problem is with your computer

you said you checked your router and modem, so it might be the router, try connecting your computer directly to your modem and see what happens, if the problem is gone then it's the router

click on "View available on the spot networks". optimistically, your on the spot community could be indexed and be available to hook up with. I for one, comprehend that my connection gets dropped now and then and as quickly as I reconnect, i'm advantageous. If this fails, touch your ISP relating to the matters.
