It's a word commonly used by the McCain/Palin presidential campaign. I think they mean they are like lone stars. They do things according to what they believe rather than falling under pressure of others.

McCain refers to himself as a Maverick. He thinks he's a star. last I checked only he belonged to that club and it was all about self admitration.
