The Bible doesn't mention a date, but through the extensive chronological lists the Bible provides, we can trace the generations all the way back to Adam, who was created about 6000 years ago.
Before that, Genesis mentions creative "days," whom many think weren't literally 24 hours, and the internal evidence within the Genesis creation account seems to verify that.
Regardless, the creative "days" only mention God preparing the earth. Genesis 1:1 had already stated that the earth and universe existed. That verse states alone and is unconnected with the verses that follow.

Many Traditional Catholics believe that Jesus Christ was born in the year 5,199 in the year of the Creation of Adam. So, it all depends when Jesus was born. I speculate that He was born in 4 B.C. as do many other historians. So, that would make the creation of the world be in 5203 B.C., thus making the world 7211 years old (5203 + 2008).
Many in the Byzantine tradition placed creation in the year 5505 B.C. The Eastern Orthodox still hold this year. So this would make the world 7513 years old.
According to the Biblical account and depending on a few minor details, the creation of the world is between 5905 years ago to around 7500 years ago.
Modern science has laid one of the biggest falsities on mankind with the so-called date of the earth being 4.5 billion years old. This is just a rouse to get people to turn their back on God by first discounting the word of God...Holy Scripture. Dinosaurs and man lived together. About 4,500 years ago a worldwide flood destroyed most of the dinosaurs and all mankind except for 8 people, of whom we are all descendants. The global flood is the reason for the fossil record -- the great disaster of all-time. Evolution and the long dates given to the world by these false scientists have been proven wrong time and time again.

It has been about 6 thousand years since the creation of man and it probably took (as far as we know) 6000 years to create everything including everything in Genesis chapter 1.
The reason we think 6000 years instead of 6 days as previously thought, is that the Bible states in several places that 1 day with God is a thousand years.

If you interpret the Bible literally, it says Earth is six thousand years old, except that a few people have interpreted the "days" of creation mentioned in the first chapter of Genesis as consisting of millions of years because time is not the same for God as it is for humans. There's another interpretation that there's a gap between the two creations described at the beginning of Genesis which could make Earth millions or billions of years old.

The Bible does not place an age on either the earth or mankind. This 6000 year business came from people stringing together the recorded ages of the Patriarchs in the Bible from Adam all the way to Christ, then adding the 2000 years since Christ. This gives us an approximate date for the creation of Adam at around 4004 BC, but it does not account for the people who were already here, the Cro-Magnons and Neanderthals that were Adam's neighbors. And, it has absolutely nothing to do with the age of the planet.
To answer your question directly: no, the Bible does not even try to date the earth.

No, it does not, specifically: some Christians believe that the book of Genesis can only be correctly read with that view in place, but that isn't the view of all, or even the majority.
The classic 4004 BC date of Archbishop Ussher is widely misunderstood even by those who hold to it.
It's certainly nothing about "just adding up ages in the bible"
Edit: " Some monk added up the begats..."
Hardly.
Perhaps the best accessible article on that is by Stephen Jay Gould. (URL) It's not a evolutionist's dismissive rant.
*All* holding views on this would be better for reading it.

The way that the figure came up was that "they" added up the generations since and including the time of Adam to the time of Jesus, and just added on the 2000 years since.
Because the bible says that the earth was created only days before Adam was, that 6,000 years is then the age of the earth, according to the bible.
Of course, according to everything else, that figure is missing six zeroes, but that's neither here nor there.
Atheistically yours,
JM Gendron.

No the Bible doesn't say, scholars have contemplated it for years, by counting generations in genealogy, no definite time, although according to common belief we have not hit the 2nd Millenia yet since Christ's crucifixion, so in God's time("Cairo" in Greek funny an Egyptian city named in Greek meaning God's time huh?) it has been less than 2 days.

Neither.. The question comes from other religions. The Christian Bible and Muslim Koran are predated by worthier and much older sacred books . The Rig-Vedas of the Hindus and the Gathas of the Zoroastrians.
