I need serious help! Please!! ?
Ok, so I'm homeschooled, and it's all online, but my computer died yesterday, and I also have important work on there too, this happened to my sisters computer too, and we took it in, and they said she just needs to buy a new computer, well neither of us can afford new desk tops, and thank God we had laptops, but all of my stuff is saved onto my desk top, and the screen won't turn on, and like everything is on there, can someone help me like know how to make the screen work or something? Ahhh, I just don't know what to do, and I'm freaking out, cause I have all my school assignments that took me weeks to do, and they are on that computer! Any advice is very greatly appreciated, thanks so much!
Thanks so much guys for all your help!!!!

Calm down. Learn to use periods. I'm out of breath just reading what you wrote...
Now, there are a few ways to do this, but I have to wonder if you have the technical expertise to do it. If you know someone who's very, very good with computers...I'm talking a real technogeek...and especially if they're good with the Linux operating system and LiveCD use, ask them to help you. There's a bunch of ways to get data off a drive using rescue CDs with Linux.
If you don't, there's another way. Look at the link below. See that cable? You can get one of these (there are other that are similar that do the same thing). You would remove the disk drive from the desktop (not hard to do, really), plug the drive into this cable, then plug the USB end into a USB port on your laptop. The laptop will now see the drive as an external drive, and you can copy everything you need from that drive to your laptop. This is the simplest, cheapest and fastest way to do this.
However, before you do anything, I'd want to know what the *cause* of the problem is. Is the computer running at all, with just no video? Did someone try another monitor (to eliminate that as the problem)? If there's no video and the computer is running, it might just be a video card. If the computer is "dead" (i.e., not running at all), it could just need a new power supply (another fairly cheap fix).
Just because someone told you *another* computer is bad (and I'd question that diagnosis as well) doesn't mean your system's having the same issue.
You really need to find a good friend or family member who can have a look and see what the issue really is.

Do you have access to a different monitor? Is it possible that just the monitor died and the computer is still working?
I would try hooking up your computer to a different monitor. You should be able to get it to boot in "safe mode" once you can see the screen.
I use Windows XP
STEP 1
Start the computer in Safe mode
1 Exit all programs.
2 Click Start > Run.
3 In Run dialog box, type the following text: msconfig
4 Click OK.
5 In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, check /SAFEBOOT.
6 Click OK.
7 When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart.
The computer restarts in Safe mode. This can take several minutes.
Note After you complete the work in Safe mode, use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in Normal mode. Go to STEP 2.
STEP 2
Start the computer in Normal mode
1 Close all programs.
2 Click Start > Run.
3 In Run dialog box, type the following text: msconfig
4 Click OK.
5 In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck /SAFEBOOT.
6 Click OK.
7 Close all programs, and restart the computer.

Just get someone to back up the hard drives of both computers, onto another hard drive, and then you can use it on your laptops. You can do this at any computer repair shop. Just get someone to first of all back up the data. Like the certified guy said, it is all intact. My advice is not to take it to Geek Squad, they are not the best at doing, they are not that reliable believe me, I know someone who did co-op as one.
Have a nice day.

If it wont turn on, then you will have to take it somewhere to see if they can get the data off of it.
But in the future I highly highly suggest that when ever you save something to your computer, you then save it to a flash drive or a cd, so that if the computer ever crashes you will not have lost your data. Computers are not perfect, so you need to be better prepared. I've had to learn that the hard way. One time I had to rewrite a whole paper.

Do not take it in anywhere yet, your data is probably still intact. You need to find a Certified Technician who can remove the hard drive & retrieve your data before some idiot tries reformating your drive.
I have seen this hundreds of times in my career. You most likely DO NOT need a new computer either. Call around & find a technician with references. Going to the so called Geeks would be your worst move.

Hello there...!
Please don't panic. You will not lose any data. You could have been affected by a virus or some thins. Well, to get the data back follow these steps.
1) Open your computer(CPU). Take the hard disk out.
2) Take that hard disk to a person you know( he/she should be knowing the hardware part)
3) Tell that person to copy the data to their computer.( this is basically done by connecting the CD-Rom drive data bus)
once connected you can open the HDD from my computer. you can now copy the data to their comp. after doing you may format the hard disk and re install OS.

Find a friend who is computer savvy, or take it to a TRUSTED local technician...not BestBuy, etc. The good news is that your computer isn't dead, it just needs someone to troubleshoot it and fix what has gone wrong.
Good luck.
BTW, I have several computers that people have given to me. They were all "DEAD." Well, they all work...they just needed some attention.

Get another hard drive and install your operating system and then put your old main hard drive on as a slave the pins in the back of your hard drive should tell you what its set on by default they are set to master ive encountered this problem before then take all the info you need out of your main hard drive make sure you make backups of all work

I agree that your hard drive is probably still intact and I'm pretty sure your Data is still usable. Perhaps you can find someone who can perform Symantec ghosting on it for you. Try asking your school's IT department.
