How do I get my dog to accept our new cat?
My daughter was given a kitten for her birthday. How freaking sweet of some idiot to give someone a pet for their birthday huh? Well anyway we have a dachshund female who is very spoiled. She is 5 years old and I have had her for 4 years. She is my baby. Last night we brought the cat home and all she wants to do is sniff the crap out of it but it is scared and paws at her which in turn make her bark which scares the cat even more. The cat went hide in a box and my poor dog just sat there and barked. The cat stayed in my daughters room and my dog whined at her door half the night. Any suggestions on what i can do. My dog does not intend to harm the cat but the cat is scared and my dog just barks and barks. I hate to have to give the cat away and break my daughters heart but that may be what i have to do if my dog doesn't stop acting like a male dog in heat because that is what it reminds me of.

I have a herding dog who I thought would never stop following my poor cat around when she first came to us. It took a while (a couple of weeks or more) but they get along really well now-- at least they ignore each other and that's a good thing! Since you have a kitten you should be even better off because she can learn in her young age to stand up to the dog and learn that the dog doesn't mean any harm. The dog will lose interest eventually. Good luck (and I agree- what the heck was that person thinking when they gave your daughter a cat that could potentially live into its 20's? That's a big commitment!)

Just wait until the cat is a bit bigger before introducing them.
When my wife brought the cat home I just dropped her in the middle of the living room floor. The dog charged at her and the cat went into defencive mode. She waited until the dog got to her, hooked him in the eye with a claw, and ran like H E L L. They have been the best of friends since. Once the dog realized that she was not going to be an easy 'kill' he accepted her as part of the family. It took awhile and he has 'tested' the relationship a few more times since. But the cat persevered and it has reached the point where she chases him now. And life is good.

I think the best way is just to wait it out. The dog is interested in the cat because its new and he wants to get in there and smell it and see what it is. Cats are great at telling dogs to "back off" and one swat or two will remind the dog that kitties need space. If your dog is getting obsessive at night, putting him in a crate in a quiet room may help, or at least keep him away from the door.

your dog is curious, and its only the first day. give it time, your doxie will get sick of the kitty and learn to live with it
