Need help with job and paycheck issues.?

I work for a large company that has stores nationwide.

I started working there about 3 weeks ago, and I didn't get a time card until just a few days ago, so up until then I had to sign in/out on a sheet. I guess they have to manually type these numbers into a computer to calculate my pay and keep records or something.

So payday was Friday. I worked on Saturday and I asked about my paycheck (it would be my first one). The manager told me there should be one in the safe, but when I went to get it at the end of my shift, he had left already. When I asked about my check today, he told me there was a problem--someone didn't punch the numbers into the computer on time, and that I will have to wait until next payday to get my check. (This means that I will have gone a 4-5 weeks until I get paid.)

I've also been having to stay ~1 hour later than I am scheduled every day. If this was a big job, I wouldn't have a problem with that, but I am a cashier. I feel that if I am supposed to leave at 5, I should be able to leave at 5.

I like the people that I work with and I don't want to leave the job if I can make this work. How can I try to get management to stay on top of things better, and is there any way I can get my paycheck earlier, instead of having to wait the 2 weeks they are saying I will have to wait?

Update:

I am keeping track of my hours in my calendar and in my phone so that I don't get cheated when I DO actually get paid.

    get direct deposit!

you'll still get your paystub when your manager seems to 'get around to it' but atleast you'll get your money on time. My work puts the deposit in my bank acct midnight before payday so you'll get your money a lot quicker. there's always a one or two week delay in paychecks so there's nothing you can do to get around that. some places 'hold' your first paycheck because of store policy in case you steal or break something.

if they cheat you on the hours, you'll have to wait until you get your paycheck. I'd be straight and upfront with your boss. Say that you want direct deposit because you've had trouble getting your check on time.

if you don't have a bank acct, get one- they are free for crying out loud- if your employer doesn't offer direct deposit or benifits- i'd consider a new job even if it's only on a temp. basis

The corporation isn't going to cut you a check early is my guess. Normally, when you start a job, there is a lengthy period of time before you get your first check (a few weeks) anyway. So far, this doesn't seem too out of line. Do keep track though, they owe you what they owe you, don't let them screw you out of pay you earned.
