Direct 3d Error on Sims 2 Pets for PC, closes the game...?

ive been playing the sims 2 and its various expansions for years with no problems, and have had Pets for at least a year. My newest expansion is Open for Buisness - which i got months ago with no problems. However this week an error will pop up in the game (always after about an hour) that says "SIMS 2 PETS ERROR: Direct 3d returned an error : D3DERR-NOTAVAILABLE! The application will now terminate" and then the program shuts down. It will reopen and reload just fine - but the error always comes back. i didnt download anything or enter any cheats. please help, my husband works 12 hour shifts and the sims gets me through the night...

Update:

The one time it said "Diret x failed to find any directx 9.0c compatable graphics adaptors in this sstem! Make sueyou have directx 9.0c compatable graphics adaptor. "

I used to have vista, and downloaded a patch for it. But now i have windows xp, could this be whats causing the problem?

ha! The same thing happened to me a month ago, and I freaked!

Make sure you have all the latest patches

make sure you have the latest DirectX

Sometimes if your computer overheats, the Direct 3D error will occur. In my case I noticed that the only lot where that error occurred was much larger, and had many more objects than any other lot I have. I just moved that family to a less elaborate house on a smaller sized lot, and (knock on wood) no more errors!

[EDIT] The "failed to detect DirectX compatible graphics adapter" message means that your graphics card does not support DirectX, but considering that Sims used to work, it seem more likely that you may need to update the drivers for your graphics card
