Electrical problem

2001 Subaru Outback 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic

I checked out this car and did a draw test on battery. it was good but the starter would drop volatge below 4V when cranking. Seems like a bad starter, but,

I noticed with the lights on, the two relays would rattle like going on/off many times a second.

I drove it after a jump, and the battery and brake lights went on and off spuratically. I turned on the blower motor and when the two dash lights went on, the motor increased in revs. a few times when they were off, the ABS light would come on. After a few miles, the guages started to fail then come on simultaniously, and once, the ignition went dead for a second and started firing again. The lights dim and brighten and when the switch is off (daylight sensor only), they would come on and off.

I tested resistance between alternator and battery, and it was at 3mV. a bit high, the alternator charged at 13.9 and 14.5 when reved, but then, would cut and charge at 12.9 and 13.6 when reved out of the blue. Very strange.

Any help would be appreciated.

Update:

at idle charging at 14.1V

with headlamps on and blower motor on high, it dischages from 12.8-12.5.

    Anthony;

    I've been thinking about this problem for the past few days. I had a car years ago that did the same thing. On yours, make sure battery has a good ground to unibody and body has good ground to motor. If OK, then look for anyplace in the front wiring harness that may be rubbed or compressed. This would indicate that there are 2 wires, both HOT creating FEEDBACK to the electrical system. As strange as this is acting I would guess that it is feedback. If it was on 1 system, such as alternator, it wouldn't effect ABS etc. If this car has had vehicle damage in the front, guaranteed that's the problem. Look around strut towers, front crossmember. This has to be the problem.

    Hope this helps.

  • if cranking voltage drops to 4 volts that is a big problem. what ids the cranking rpm, is is about 400 rpm, if you are tecting for resistance and getting an mV reading then you are on the wrong setting resistance is measure in ohms.

    IS A VERY STRANGE, ONE THIS SOUNDS LIKE A PROPLEM WITH THE CARS ONBOARD COMPUTER

    WHY NOT TAKE IT DOWN TO YOUR LOCAL DEALER AND HAVE IT PLUGGED INTO THEIR DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE, IT MIGHT JUST NEED THE COMPUTER TO BE RESET,
