Computer taking forever to load from startup?

I use an Acer Aspire M1100 Windows Vista Basic computer, and it is fast, plus I just installed an additional 2GB of ram to it yesterday, but when I type my login password, the little Welcome screen and circle are there for like 2 minutes, and this didn't used to happen. Also sometimes after it logs in, I get a blue screen, and it scares me (making me think I crashed) but then loads the taskbar and desktop etc.

Just a few minutes ago it wouldn't start, it loaded the Acer logo screen, then it had a black screen with the cursor on it but wouldn't move. Startup Repair wouldn't fix it either, but I shut it off then turned it on and it worked.

Why is this? How can I fix it?

I know I don't have any viruses, because Avast! would have told me.

Everything else loads up very fast (Mozilla Firefox, Windows Live Messenger, Winamp, etc.) after it starts though.

P.S. Sorry for the length, but I like to make sure I have details.

There is a number of possibilities here:

    Startup is loading a bot/Virus

    RAM is interfering with loading

    !

    http://www.safer-networking.org/

    Download Spy bot S&D

Run it and update and THEN immunize and scan.

    Here's the usage instructions

    2nd

Run and install and update Ad aware

    Here's the usage instructions

    3rd

IF the virus has gone Proceed to step 4

IF the virus hasn't gone. Follow and run the program here

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/smitRem.php

Download smitRem.exe, saving the file to your desktop. Double click it to extract the contents to a

folder of it's own. Restart your computer in safe mode, log on to the user account that is infected,

open the smitRem folder and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on

screen and allow disk cleanup to complete. Upon reboot, you can reset your desktop background. Note: XP

users using the XP theme may experience a change to the Classic Windows theme. This can be changed on the

    themes tab of desktop properties.

If you are unsure email me!!

    Step 4

    Run and download CC leaner

    www.ccleaner.com

    http://www.5starsupport.com/tutorial/ccleaner.htm

There is some slightly less detailed user instructions.

I would recommend doing the Cleaning scan AND then use the registry scan at the side toolbar.

    5

    Go to start run Msconfig

Look under startup. If there is anything there that you dont want to load or are not going to need when yuo turn the PC on then unclick it as this will take much long. REMEMBER if you untick it it could bugger up your next load so do a google check before unticking to make sure you dont uncheck antivirus or the core system files

Hope this helps and don't forget to email me with any problems regarding.

PS when you say you installed an ADDITIONAL 2GB im guessing you have Vista 64bit. Just checking because if you put over 2GB of RAM in 32 windows vista you will be wasting your time as it only supports up to 2GB

One question is did it do this before you expanded your memory ?

If so then its obviously something with the startup, you can defrag your hard drive to clean up the file structure and also check what is actually starting up when you log in.

It's quite common for Anti virus programs to update themselves when first starting up so this can delay the actual appearance of the desktop.

Check if this is happening by looking to see if Avast is set to automatically update etc.

You can dig deeper to check your registry to see whats active on startup but its most likely your registry may simply be larger than it used to be and you might have programs checking for updates or similar on startup.

Finally I would virus check with an alternate AV program, one AV program can never find everything, try running adaware or similar so your sure its clean.

Friend, if u have an internet connection then it could be at the root.

Go 2 Control Panel, Select windows update

    Go 2 change settings.

    Select 'never check for updates'

apply it. After this perhaps pc will start slow 2-3 times but then it would be normal

if u dont want 2 disable updates then i cant help

You might want to start backing up all of your files, If I had to guess I'd say your hard drive is starting to go bad. The long pause on a black screen with a white cursor, means the BIOS has nothing to read from.

    Good luck!

Recovery media and Restoring a system to factory load

    Solution

Acer systems ship with eRecovery Managr, which facilitates the creation of Recovery media (CDs or DVDs) so the system may be restored to the original load in the event of unrecoverable issues.

Could be one of two things or both.

Be sure to delete Temporary internet files. These can be numerous.

You also may have too many Start up files opening. Exit some of those that you don't use on a regular basis.

These are two things that I have experienced.

It sounds like your registry could be clogged up. Download CCleaner (google it), and install and run it. Everything should run smooth again after a reboot.
