Is it okay to refer to the reader in an MLA style essay?
Example, I want to use a sentence like, "When was the last time you brushed your teeth?" Is that not right?

MLA style is how to format and cite references in an essay.
Your sentence is fine to use. MLA style is explained on the OWL and many other sites. There are also a few handbooks that are useful. Many of them are at your local library. Just ask a librarian for help finding a handbook in the NonFiction area of your library. Until then:

If that is your topic sentence, or beginning/hook it's fine. That is one of the options of starting your essay. SO yes, you can.
