Spiritually speaking...Can you help me solve this riddle?

My son 's teacher asked my son's classroom this riddle. The ONLY hint the teacher gave them was this: It is a living thing. I tried asking this riddle in the YA jokes and riddles but no one could solve it. It hs been 3 days and none of his 10th grade class has figured it out.

Here goes if you wanna give it try.......

What walks forward by day, backward by night.

Flies when it rains, and crawls when it's dry?

I am going NUTS trying to figure this out. One more hint: It is not water, it is Not the tide.

Update:

The teacher told the class that it was EASY!

Update 2:

@tebone03... Sorry, but good guess. The teacher said it was a living thing.

Update 3:

Can you please clarify your answer? why did you capitalize TIME?

Update 4:

@Dr. Rjinswand : Exactly, plus the teacher said it was a living thing! This is going to make me go insane for sure. : /

Update 5:

@Victoria: Good guess, but does a butterfly walk backward by night? I really don't know, does it? Doea a butterfly fly when it rains? I honestly don't know that either. Okay guys, I am starting to question my intelligence here!

Update 6:

@griff: THANK YOU! Yes, I will let you know if the teacher will give up the answer. I might just make a special trip down to the school tomorrow. I wish my son had never asked me this!

Update 7:

@Magnetic Ice: VERY good brain work for the human being part. I never thought of us. Yes, we do walk forward by day like to work and places, and backward by night, like when we go home. Sheesh, but what about the rest of it? My son's teacher must be really proud of this riddle because the correct answer gets a pizza party.

Update 8:

@Rick's Girl : I really like the way you explained yourself. Very good guess! I will post the answer once we find out. I have never had anything bother me more than this stupid riddle of all things. It's gonna be a restless night, and it will be for all of you other type A personalities like me as well.

Update 9:

@The Walkin' Dude: Awww, Thanks for the star. Whoever guesses this deserves The Stars. I will post the answer as soon as I get it from the teacher who enjoys this type of torture. Inhumane, I tell ya!

Update 10:

@RennyB: You work that brain boy!Wow...I'm very impressed with what you came up with. You guys are all pretty amazing. Does the only one who knows the answer a teacher at North High School in Wichita, Kansas? Surely someone has heard this riddle before!

Update 11:

P.S. I wish I could give you all ten points for your efforts, you deserve it. I did give everyone a thumbs up. I know....big whoop, but that's all I can do :)

Update 12:

@wynner01: AMAZING! By George, I think you've got it! the riddle was given to my son's 10th grade zoology class. I am sure he will have the answer when he gets home. I wish I would have checked answers before he left for school this morning. Let's see what he says when he gets home. I will post the answer his teacher gives and award the 10 points then. I'm sure I speak for all who tried diligently to answer... Thank you, thank you , thank you! SUPER JOB TO ALL. Stayed tuned for the teacher's answer. My son wrestles for North High and has conditioning after school so it won't be until after then which will be around 5:30 or so.

Update 13:

It was not his Zoology class, it was his english teacher and he did not have that class today. I will give this question until Monday after school and then give the points that way everyone gets a chance to see what the teacher says it is.

Update 14:

@Polonius☆ 180 Aww...Thanks for trying! I am waiting for my son to get home from wrestling. I will post the answer for you when he gets home, and will strangle him if he comes home without an answer. Thanks to everyone again. You all have the patience of saints! :)

Update 15:

My son just walked in from school and asked the teacher if the answer to the riddle was a mayfly? The teacher said it is not a mayfly nor the poem Betty. The teacher says he will give the answer tomorrow.......Ahhhhhhhhhhh, the devil I tell you! This has got to be the most simple riddle ever. The teacher has reminded my son that it is SIMPLE. I however beg to differ.

The answer I believe is Betty.

The poem "Betty" by Lola Ridge...a portion goes.....

...you must keep your face to the night and walk backwards,

when it rains and you are pulling off flies legs, mama let's you play house.....

or the fly...it flies when it rains and crawls after it has its legs pulled off?? Perhaps this might be a little too obscure.......or

    Another possibility is a Mayfly.

In larval stage it burrows. Goes out forward by day and backs into its burrow at night. It hatches and flies usually during a rain storm in May. When it's dry it crawls. They live for a relatively short time.

    EDIT:

The teacher cannot say that Mayfly is wrong as it fits the criterion....it's just not the answer she's looking for......typical teacher...always in control....always right......AR AR AR AR!

I think it might be people.

In the early part of our lives, we are moving forward, growing, learning, changing. As we enter old age, we find ourselves moving backward, remembering less, often no longer able to care for ourselves (moving backwards toward being like a child again).

When it rains, we walk more quickly, when it's dry we walk more slowly.

I do hope you'll post the answer once you receive it!

A human being? The "walk" to places during the day & "walk" backwords when it's time to go home. & they crawl when its really dry because of no water. I couldn't think of the other part. That's tricky. You deserve a star.

EDIT: & when it says "flies when it rains" I think it means people prance & play in the rain or "fly" as in run away from the rain...

I'm handicapped here, I live in Northern California and it's true, it never rains here.

EDIT: Arrgh! I've been coming back to your post twice a day waiting for this answer. I want to kick your son's teacher in the shins!

    the devil!

What walks forward by day satan walks by day to hurt us christians, backward by night also to terrorize us with bad dreams and shadows.

Flies when it rains, because when the holy spirit rains down he has to leave, an crawls when it's dry would be when he tempts people!

p.s i am totally a Christian. I don't worship Satan but i worship the one and true God.

  • I also put the riddle out and got some answers, none of which match.

One thing for shure it not easy!

I haven't the faintest clue. That's rare for me :P

And it can't be "TIME", because that doesn't make sense. Time doesn't fly when it rains.

And it doesn't go backward at night.
