Has anybody had any luck using a bleat call on deer?

It's the little can-shaped object that makes a doe like sound when turned over.I just bought one from Wall-mart, and I know it's a little early to be thinking about the rut, but do they work outside the rut?

Yeah I have and they work.

but work best when they are in the rut. don't over use it or you will scare them away just bleat once and wait like 1 or 2 mins. then again and wait longer and be ready to shoot I had one deer crash out of the woods so close to me last season I couldn't get a shot off before I scared him (well we scared each other) but yes they work

I tried one that a friend of mine had. He said that it didn't work for him but was willing to let me try it. I didn't have any luck with it that I know of. I used it for a while and then put it back in my bag and left it there. A while later I did see a deer and shot it. It may have been attracted to the sound of the call or may have been coming that way anyway. I don't know so I can't say if the call helped for sure on not.

A call that I have had luck with is rattling horns. The first time I tried them I got a nice buck and I think if I hadn't shot him, he may have almost run over me. I was well hidden in some brush and really worked those antlers. I started out just "tickling" the tined together lightly. Then in a minute of two, I really started grinding and smashing them together while I kicked the ground around me with my feet. I was making the sound of one hell of a fight. Then I put the antlers down just as I saw a buck come running toward me. He had his mind on fighting another buck in his territory and wasn't paying any attention to me hidden in the brush. As he came running, I easaed my gun up and shot him not more than about 30 yards from me. Those rattling horns really work but only during the rut. They are much less effective before and after the rut. My experience was pretty typical from what I have read and heard. When they hear the sounds of a fight, they will come running and will have thrown caution to the wind. Rattle and then get ready. Don't lolly gag around or you may miss a shot. It happens quickly in most cases.

The can work, but your best bet is in the rut. I personally do not call deer much, mainly just a grunt or two every 30 minutes or so. Some people really get into the calling on deer, but I reserve that for turkey hunting, and just "ambush" deer.

A doe bleat is often used to stop a moving buck for a shot if he's moving. But from experience, just yelling "HEY!" will make them stop, and not run off, like you may think.

    Good luck this season...

They work well during the rut. They work sometimes before the rut.
