If at all possible, I recommend getting a bow from an archery pro shop, where you can talk with someone in person and look at a lot of different bows. You may be able to get a fairly good brand second-hand for not much more money than a KMart special brand-new.

Don't get me wrong; I'm sure a Bear compound bow that's wrapped in plastic and intended to shoot right out of the package is fine if you just happen to be exactly the size and strength it's made for. I don't know about you, but I'm not that lucky. A pro can help you find a bow that's the right size, style, and draw weight for you, and get it properly tuned to minimize frustration. Brand name is less important than these things, when you are starting out.

I started out with a second-hand youth bow whose brand I have forgotten, that cost me about $150-$200. Once I knew I enjoyed the sport enough to invest in a new bow, I bought a Martin Rage for about $600. The pro shop gave me full credit for the trade-in on my first bow. At the time (several years ago), it was the only high-quality bow available in the same style all the way from extra long to small-frame. I also liked that Martin called the small size "small frame" instead of "youth". I'm a grown woman, not a boy!

I find that a good bow is usually judged by preference. But for a beginner i would go for a more forgiving bow like with a longer axle to axle length. What i mean by this is how long your bow is the longer it is the more forgiving. I highly recommend going to an archery pro shop or hunting shop to have it set up with your sights your rest etc, this is so because if your bow is not properly tuned you have less accuracy and accuracy is important to all shooters. I also recommend practicing good form if you practice good form it will teach you to be a more consistent shooter. Just a bit of information about single and double cam set ups a double cam set up has a smoother draw out meaning when you pull it back the let off gradually comes into play a a single cam system is a smoother shot. So if you want my input go to your archery shop and shoot a couple bows and the person at the shop will usually help you use good form also let off is a big thing too most bows have a 70-80% let off the higher the let off the longer you can shoot and the less stress on your shoulder buy a kisser button also.

Here are some bow company names that are good for beginners

    Parker

    Browning

    Fred Bear

    PSE

and a few others for more information and a price range of these bows go to www.cabelas.com or www.basspro.com

    Best Compound Bow For Beginners

  • 1 decade ago

Matthews makes a great bow for any beginner and it come in a package, 5 arrows and quiver the bow and a wrist guard. It is called the Genesis and is priced around 200 dollars at most any local store. It is 15 pounds of drawback weight but never changes as far back as you go. It has no sights or anything like that but a great beginner bow.

It all depends on what you want to do with archery. If you want to hunt and want to do it quickly then the best bow is the compound bow. Get something like a PSE bow, that's the brand, they're affordable and quite good. Not the best, but they will stand behind their product and replace or repair the bow should something go wrong.

If you want to get into target archery and have no time frame, then a good bow to start with is a recurve bow with sights. It's hard enough to use that you need to learn to use a bow properly or you won't hit a target, but it's easy enough that you won't get frustrated. Something like the Bullseye or many of it's clones are decent beginner equipment. They're a lot cheaper than the compounds I mentioned above.

Now, if you're just getting started and you're in the US, visit www.usarchery.org and search for a range in your area. Who knows, you might be next door to one of them, some of these ranges, like ours in Los Angeles, offer a free introductory class and free equipment for your use during open range hours. Go to the range, shoot our equipment and find out which type of archery interest you more.

A good bow for begginer should meet the following citeria,

    1)easy to handle

    2)not too much draw weight

    3)not expensive

Recommend a archery shop which has many traditional bows,

IF you say that your friend is Dragging you into archery... don't bother getting a bow... Archery is a sport, that is Mental, physical, and for some even spiritual. you have to come in willingly can't be pushed or "dragged"

Now if your willing to join the hundreds of thousands of archers then get a Recurve for now something you can pull easy but not like your pulling a door open. Make sure you go to an Archery Pro-shop not Walmart or a discount sporting good store.

Bear makes good bows, and most wall-marts carry them for a reasonable price. You may want to go to a local archery shop to try out several before you make a choice though.
