What are the differences between a crow & a raven?
From time to time, I see very large black birds flying overhead where
I live. And they go "Caw", Caw". Now, I am not sure that this is a
crow cuz I don't know if crows hang out in urban areas. Could it be a
raven? Just what are the differences between the two species?
Crows have an reputation from olden times as an harbringer of death, and ravens are so darn intelligent, they are a hoot (no pun intended).
to watch as they perform their antics. So if you know, please fill me in. Thanks

Both are members of the Corvidae Family. They are similar in appearance but there are some slight differences. Ravens are bigger, and more sturdy looking than crows. They also have a heavier/thicker bill. When in flight the difference can be seen by looking at the tail. Ravens have a diamond shaped tail while crows have a squared off tail. See more info here:

Ravens tend to live in mountains. I live in New England and there are crows all over the place but to see Ravens you have to go to the higher peaks in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Though I have seen ravens in winter in hilly wilderness type areas. Ravens fly differently. They will soar on wind currents like hawks. Since it is hard to judge they size of a bird flying some distance you can tell them apart by the shape of their tail. The ravens tail is diamond shaped. A crows tail is fan shaped. Both crows and ravens have a varied diet, They both will eat grain, fruit and beeries and feed on dead animals, But ravens will also catch insect, small rodents, frogs, and lizards. and small snakes.

Crows migrate, and ravens stay all year long, so if you see a big black bird in the winter, you'll know its a raven.
