Why did universal health care fail only after a miserable 8 months in hawaii, and obama wants it for whole US?
Any why do Democrats naively believe that national socialized health care will fare any better nationally?

SImple....those that were paying for healthcare figured they could get it for free...why pay for it. So they jumped on the program and it broke the bank. This is a state wide system that could'nt support a mere 2000 children. And this is what the socialist Obama wants to make in America nation wide.
That's the problem with liberal agenda's...they fail and make no sense. OH...they want the right to demonize the tobacco industry...but then turn around and raise taxes on it and make programs dependant on the buying of the product.
They wanted to push Ethanol, but the unintended consequences was the skyrocketing of Corn prices and food shortages because of it.
They want to tax the hell out of the rich to make up for the corrupt and inefficient Government when we already have the highest corporate tax in the world, the top 1% pay 21% of the taxes, the top 5% pay 40% of the taxes...just how far will these idiots push "the rich" and small businesses before they all tell the government to go to hell and move to Mexico, or Ireland, or anyplace outside the USA so they can be profitable ?

Universal health care works well in all other first world countries, and these are places that routinely place above the USA in quality of life and happiness studies.
Why do people think that one socialist policy related to health care automatically makes everyone evil socialists? In Canada they have all the same rights and freedoms and opportunities to make or break their own fortune, AND they get free health care. That's a pretty fantastic deal if you ask me. No one is turned away at the hospital because they can't afford it, and no one is driven to financial ruin because they get sick. Quality of life is better, and they live in a free, capitalist, entrepreneurial society.
By the way - George W, a Republican, just made a VERY socialist move by bailing out the banks "for the good of the people". Do all of you Republicans shooting down Obama's "socialist" health care policies not see this? Or do you just shoot down socialism when it suits you?
There are a TON of socialist policies in place all over the USA today as we speak. All we're arguing over is a matter of degree.
As to the question about Hawaii - that had nothing to do with the concept of universal health care and everything to do with the way it was implemented. Universal health care works well all over the world. Just ask any of those countries if they would like to give it back and I guarantee you'll get an emphatic no.

Obama's plan is not Universal Health Care. His plan is to provide the same health insurance plan that he and Senator McCain enjoy for purchase by anyone who wishes to. If you like your current plan then you can keep your current plan but with a lower cost of premiums and greater assurances that your insurance will do what it is supposed to do when you get sick. If you don't have health insurance and would like to, then you can buy into the federal health insurance at an affordable rate to ensure that everyone who wants health insurance can get health insurance. He will provide tax benefits to small businesses who provide insurance for their employees to promote employer provided health insurance. He will make sure that those with preexisting conditions get coverage. And he will promote preventative health care and policies to try and keep the country healthy. It's all detailed on his website and a multitude of others if you do some VERY simple research.

People who were already able to afford health care began to stop paying for it so they could get it for free.
This was only a state universal CHILD health care program.
I can see it bombing again big time if it went national including adults and taxes sky rocketing if Obama tries to implement a national socialized health care for the U.S.

It failed because people who had coverage for their children, dropped the coverage to save money. They did not see why they should have to pay for what others get for free. There was also an increase in unnecessary doctor visits. Socialism has always failed and always will.
Some of the Comrades believe it failed bc it was given to all children. They believe only poor children should have insurance payed for by the govt and no one else. So I buy insurance for my children and then the govt takes some of my money to buy insurance for the children of people who cannot or will not bother to make the needed sacrifice.

Insurance companies. Unnecessary middle-men.
It should be "Vouchers" for citizens only, with carry-over for unused yearly amounts. Able to be used for anyone you want. This would solve the big mystery of getting something that helps & works.
I have no desire to pay for illegals with an open borders, gang bangers shooting each other, drug users, alcoholics, over-eaters, sports athletes, or the like.
and ...
The only way me & mine would go for that kind of deal is if the Politicians & their families use the very same one.
... and that will never happen ... will it?

It failed because the state of Hawaii offer it to everyone for free, hence the name "universal".
They planned on 10,000 people being eligible, planned to fund that many, and they were confused when EVERYONE IN HAWAII dropped their health care plans and signed up for the free stuff!
(Duh!)

Obama is not in support of universal health care. Find a fact-based website, not some blog, before you make assumptions.
He actually outlined in detail at each debate what he supports for health care.

Er. Then why is a form of state-wide health care still in effect in several other states (including, I believe, New York)?
- Anonymous1 decade ago
Because they implemented it wrong. Hawaii either needed a more targeted program or an adjustable taxation program to cover the costs. They forgot what would happen if people dropped their private insurance.
One failure doesn't make a system unworkable.
