Why are tattoos considered unprofessional?

I want a tattoo that goes from my elbow to my wrist (forearm?) and I hear from everywhere:

"Think of your future. You're going to want a good job one day."

Why would getting visible tattoos risk a good job? Why do we (a society) really consider tattoos to be unprofessional? I think I could be great at my future job with tattoos.

Update:

God loves me and my tattoos. When he takes me to Heaven, he's taking my soul, not my flesh. But it's kind of warming, you sound like my mom, lol...

Update 2:

I have five already. They're all on my back tho, I'm runnin outta room, lol. It just makes me sad that I can't do it and if I did, my character would be judged ;(

Update 3:

Thanks zia, God also says to not judge. hahaha, you don't even know!

btw, defining ppl with tats as trash, is judgemental, get outta ur house every once in a while...

Update 4:

Very arrogant? Bad attitude? Disrespectful? Goodness. How else can I solely be judged by a five sentence question and visible tattoo? I feel sorry for the ppl that have nothing better to do than to judge another on their physical appearance. Imma go for it. It seems you can never make anyone/everyone happy anyways. Long sleeves, here I come, lol.

I am inclined to agree with you. How is it that putting ink on your body should decline your odds of recieving an appropriate job? Here in the United States, they speak of freedom of speech yet we are unable to do so in the manner in which we choose. For example, my cousin is a lesbian and she has a tatoo on her neck of her gf's name. She recently began applying for quite a few teaching positions but she was declined after the interview process. One of them cleary pointed out to have her tat removed before applying anywhere else. Why should she have to give up something that has meaning in her life in order to pursue her career? This not only occurs in America, but in third world country's as well. When we went to Bangladesh last summer, they ripped my cousin a new one for going against the religion by getting a tatoo and being gay. I highly doubt God would hate his children based on their sexual preference or how they wish to percieve themselves. Even if he did, who the f*ck are you people to criticize?

-Sorry for the long essay...this question just got me really pissed off at society for being a bunch of d*cks.

Before tatoos became so popular by rock bands and people like Dennis Rodman they were markings of white trash, prostitutes and junkies alike. Today is different. It has become very fashionable. Unfortunally it still carries a stigmata of old stereotypes.

If you decide to get a tat then you gotta take those negative sterotypes with you. Good with the bad. Or else don't do it.

Even though it's retarded ..i can't stop thinking "tramp stamp" when i see a girl with a lower back tattoo.. Words such as "slut" and "she gets around i see" is embedded in my way of thinking. Hard to break old habits no matter if they are true or not.

Choosing to have a tattoo you have to accept there will be people who will judge you. There is nothing you can do to change it. The trick is to not care.

I think it just has to do with the way it looks kinda like wearing an open back shirt to work is unprofessional. Don't get me wrong I have tattoos and I work in a business casual environment but I keep them covers because my tattoos may not represent the company and if I work for them, then I have to consider my image and make it fit the best I can with what they stand for. Just give the tattoos some thought because once you have them you have them and I hear there hell to get rid of. Remember this is your body and you have to be happy with it.

So many people have tattoos now, sometimes really big ugly ones, that I can't imagine the one you're describing would interfere with job hunting. Unless you want to be an actress or model or something like that. On the other hand, I also don't see the point of planning to cover it up all the time. LOVE is a nice thought, just wear it proudly.

Tattoos are like a favorite shirt, they both become out-of-style eventually. And laser removal, supposedly, leaves a reddish stain on your skin.

Also, people are dynamic, that means people do not stay the same, no matter what people say. Everyone changes throughout their life.

For example compare yourself to various ages in your life such as what were you like when you were in Kindergarten, then fourth grade, then junior high and so forth. If you say, "I haven't changed too much over the years, you are wrong! Stand a kindergarten child next to a Junior high school student. There's NO comparison! You might say, well that only applies to children. But my answer to that is - children are human beings, and we are genetically programed to develope along a set of guidelines that are pretty much universal guidlines!

Over time, you will change, the decisions you make today will follow you around like an annoying crush!

The current view of tattoos in the professional world is that they are ugly body damage that defile the skin of street gang members, biker gang members, white trash, drug-abusing teens, etc.

Of course this is ridiculous, but they're old and set in their ways.

And when you consider the recent statistics that about HALF of the current young generation has a tattoo of some sort, it is obvious that the stigma against tattoos in the professional world will change within the next few decades for the simple reason that it has to--if the world rejects half of its educated potential employees, then there will be a whooole lot of empty jobs.

Because people see tattoos as meaning the person might be irresponsible or wild, based on stereotypical "bad boys" we've seen marked up with tattoos in movies and things. I say go for it, but it might be a better choice to put it somewhere a little less obvious just for that reason.

Tattoos are cool and screw anyone that talks sh!t about it. I've got a few tats myself. They are unprofessional in appearance, but it's nothing that a long sleeved shirt can't cover up. Besides, we are moving towards a new era, the future professionals people of the world will understand the tat. A decade ago, being completely bald was taboo... nowadays, many judges, businessmen and professionals sport the "gangsta" bald look.

Well unfortunately society does JUDGE. I personally love tats and think they are lovely. Just remember that if you do get a tat on that part of your arm, you may need to wear a long sleeved shirt while at work....I mean in a perfect world it shouldn't matter but unfortunately it does.

I've also heard that some employers are discouraged by tattoos. I don't have any and I'm not a real big fan of them either. They are quite permanent. I'd strongly suggest weighing all the ramifications before getting any. And remember, removal is much more expensive than getting them in the first place.

I think we judge too quickly, but I do have do say that tattoos when you are old and wrinkly look pretty gross. I do like them on young people though....
