Unless the hard drive is nearly full (say only 300Mb left) then removing unused programs will have only a very tiny effect on speed (if any). I know that it often gets listed under "things to do to speed up your PC" but I have been an expert user for quite a few years (since 1992) and have *never* seen any noticeble speed increase from doing this.

So- I know that is not answering your question - but just to warn you that you might spend a long time working this one out only to find it didn't give you what you wanted.

You would get more of a speed increase by defragging the hard drive.(but still not much)

The easiest way to speed up a PC is often to add more RAM

    Go into the safe mode

    Add/remove programs and remove them

    Also

    Start

    Search

    For all files and folders

    All files and folders

In the open window add the program name and delete it

instead of using a laptop try using a windows 98, they are much better in my opinion.
