LE supervisors, how do you make your schedule's?
Odd question but I have been working on an alternate schedule for my department...
Right now we work five 8hr shifts a week for 40 hours. I have suggested a few alternate schedules, BUT the kicker is that the schedule has to fit in 40 hours for 6 people tuesday through monday. I am having a hard time figuring it out alone, and thought that the collective knowledge of alot of the ol' salts on here might help. I'll edit my question if you need more info. only serious answers please.
by the way, the reason I want a schedule change is beause LE is about the only type of fulltime job where the schedule can give you more than 2 days off a week and I would like to take advantage of that.
*el scott* thanks bro for the answer. I love that shift though. I used to work it at the job before the one I currently work. Good times, Good times!

Man, you gotta keep it 40 hours a week?
I work 12 hour shifts now and it is the best for LEOs. I have worked 8 hour shifts in the past. We had three Patrol squads. The Lieutenant in charge of each squad would schedule his people two days off a week and five days on. The theory was that we would rotate to where everyone came up for some weekends off. The reality was that my Lieutenant always scheduled himself off for Friday and Saturday. That took up one weekend slot that his people never got to use. We worked three shifts a day one morning, one mid-shift, and one night shift. I hated it. Especially the mid-shift (1500 hours to 2300 hours). We rotated shifts every four months.
Here is the best I have ever worked. It is 12 hour shifts. First week work Monday and Tuesday, off Wednesday and Thursday, then work the weekend Friday to Sunday. Total is 60 hours. Second week work Wednesday and Thursday with Monday, Tuesday, and the Weekend off. Total is 24 hours. That is 84 hours every two weeks. The up side is every other weekend off! You will need four shifts (2 day and 2 night) to cover Patrol. Depending on the month you will come out with 4 to 16 hours of overtime. My current agency doesn't rotate shifts so I have been on nights since 2002 but that's the way I like it. If an Officer wants to go to a different rotation he has to put in a letter and can only move if someone is willing to trade shifts with him/her. I have worked places that rotate every so often.
